How to Copy a YouTube Transcript (Full Text, Fast)

You found the transcript, you want the words, and copying them turns out to be oddly fiddly. Select-all inside YouTube's transcript panel grabs the timestamps too, drops line breaks in strange places, and often stops selecting halfway down. This is a known friction point, and there are a couple of reliable ways around it.

Why the built-in panel fights you

YouTube's transcript panel is a scrolling, virtualized list — rows are added and removed from the DOM as you scroll. A manual selection only captures what is currently rendered, which is why long transcripts copy incompletely. Each row also interleaves a timestamp with the text, so a raw copy gives you a column of times you then have to strip out by hand.

The fast way: a tool that returns clean text

A dedicated transcript tool fetches the entire caption track at once — not just the visible rows — and gives you a single Copy button that puts the full, clean text on your clipboard. You get every line, no missing middle, and the option to keep or drop timestamps.

If you want to do it manually anyway

1. Open the video, click the three-dot menu under it, choose 'Show transcript'.
2. Scroll the panel all the way to the bottom first, so every row has rendered at least once.
3. Click the three-dot menu inside the transcript panel and turn off timestamps.
4. Click into the panel, select all, and copy — then paste into a plain-text editor to check nothing is missing.

It works for short videos. For anything over about twenty minutes, the virtualized list makes a complete manual copy unreliable, and a tool is simply faster.
