Transcript of Sweet nostalgia with Warren Buffett and Bill Gates
Bill Gates
0:12Boy, this is my kind of place.0:15I think it's a lot of fun when you can have
a product, like a See's Candy or Coke or whatever,0:24to really love the product itself.0:26I just like to eat, and especially candy.0:28When I was six, we're talking 1936 now, I
got a nickel a week allowance, and we would0:37go off to Ernie's Drugstore.0:39There they would have penny candy.0:42So, the nickel would entitle me to five choices.0:45And, I could spend an hour making those choices.0:49Peanut brittle's my favorite.0:50Well, I like the peanut brittle a lot, and
there's no way to stop once you start eating0:55peanut brittle.0:56Oh, Cracker Jacks pretty good.0:58Yeah, they have the prize in every box.1:00Yeah, Cracker Jacks.1:02And that's one of those things where they manage
to get the salt and the sugar mix, where you1:06just keep eating because-1:08You keep eating-1:09Because it's salty and sugary.1:10Yeah, I got addicted to these kind of things,
and Whoppers I love.1:14I just, I can eat those.1:17And Milk Duds.1:18Milk Duds we used to-1:20How about dark chocolate?1:21What do you think of that?1:22Well, I like almost everything.1:25Just offer it to me and find out.1:28This is unbelievable.1:29Oh, these.1:31I claim to be pretty good at pinball.1:33I bought a machine for $25 dollars in 1946,
and built a small empire out of it.1:39It was the best business I was ever in.1:40I peaked very early in my business career.1:42It's been all downhill ever since.1:45This article is the start of the personal
computing industry.1:49This really cheap kit computer appeared on
the cover of this magazine, and we saw it1:55in December of '74, and then Paul was saying,
"Okay, you've gotta drop out.2:00We've gotta start Microsoft.2:01This is gonna happen without us."2:03In fact, this company who made this, they
became our first customer.2:06That is something.2:08I'd heard the story, but I've never seen the
magazine before.2:11Frankly, if I'd read it I wouldn't have known
what to do with it.2:15This is a book that first came out in 1949,
"The Intelligent Investor" by Ben Graham.2:20When I read this book it changed my life.2:22Anytime the market takes a sharp dive and
you get tempted to sell or something, just2:27pull out this book and reread it.2:31Warren made his first trip to Hawaii when
I got married.2:37Melinda's gift to me was that she had Willie
Nelson come and sing the night before the2:42wedding, so this has got special history for
me.2:47Yeah, it would have.2:48When I was a kid, the big thing to do was
listen to "Your Hit Parade", presented by2:51Lucky Strike.2:52"Be happy, go Lucky", and they would start
with number 10 and work their way up to number one.2:57And Glen Miller was probably number one.3:00There's Glen Miller album.3:01Alright, here we go.3:02I can probably hum any one of those songs
on there.3:25I'll take the whole place.3:27Let’s get it all.
