0:01No one can stand between me.0:09Welcome back everyone it's Charlie,0:11Christopher Nolan's Odyssey movie is finally out 0:13This will be my review 0:14There's a lot to unpack 0:16This is one of the biggest movies that he's ever done.0:18He said that everything he's done before has led to this achievement, even though I 0:22still think fans will be divided on exactly which of his movies is best.0:25And because most of Hollywood is in this movie, you're also going to be seeing 0:29another big Spider-Man movie in the next couple 0:32weeks with a lot of the same actors in it.0:35We have two big movies with Tom Holland's Zendaya and 0:37Jon Bernthal coming out at the same time this summer.0:40Christopher Nolan is really hoping that you come to his movie.0:43The Odyssey is Christopher Nolan's retelling of Homer's epic Odyssey story,0:47and even though it's over 3,000 years old, I don't think we need a spoiler alert for 0:50a 3,000 year old story that we all had to read in high school, but I will still say 0:54spoiler warning for the movie.0:56The movie follows Odysseus's life portrayed by Matt Damon after the Trojan 1:00War as he tries to return home to Ithaca and his wife and son Penelope,1:04played by Anne Hathaway and Tom Holland, who plays Telemachus, tries to defy the 1:09gods, then slowly tries to reckon with the very terrible things that he did during 1:13the Trojan War and after the war while he was trying to bring his men home alive.1:18So for the first two acts of the movie, you're watching him remember the Trojan 1:21War, and it does move like a Christopher Nolan movie typically moves where he's 1:25jumping around in the internal timeline of the movie.1:28Odysseus in present day remembering the Trojan War, violating Zeus's law of 1:32hospitality and all the other gods, including Athena, his patron goddess,1:35played by Zendaya, commit unspeakable acts.1:38Then by the third act starts to come to terms with the horrors that he's committed 1:43in a very rewarding conclusion as he does successfully accomplish his goal of 1:46seemingly trying to become a better person for vowing to be better.1:51If you've read the Odyssey story, even if you just did the cliff notes in 1:54school when you were supposed to be reading it.1:56No judging, no judging.1:57The movie is basically a speedrun version of it.2:00Most of the changes that Christopher Nolan makes are to the costumes, like the way 2:04people look, the languages, like the way they actually speak to each other,2:07practical aspects like the ships that the Greeks are sailing in, just to make it 2:11look more like a modern movie, he said.2:14Christopher Nolan told it in a much more articulate way, but he was basically 2:17saying he was trying to make the movie accessible to modern audiences in less 2:21dense than if it were the characters just literally 2:24reading Homer's translated Odyssey story off the page.2:28Ever read the Odyssey?2:29After Odysseus was caught by the Cyclops, he told that his name was nobody.2:34So when he poked his eye out and his friends asked 2:36who did it, all the Cyclops could say was nobody.2:40There are some of you that I've seen in the comments on my previous Odyssey 2:43trailer videos this year who were either students of the 2:46Odyssey in depth in college or even at the PhD level.2:49So some of you probably know way more about the Odyssey than even Christopher 2:52Nolan did, but generally the movie feels like a big win for Christopher Nolan 2:56superfans as well as teachers out there who are not going to be able to have an 3:01S-tier Odyssey movie to show in their classes while they're teaching the book.3:05But most of you are probably used to all the modernized changes directors have made 3:08to different adaptations of the Odyssey story up to this point.3:10There have been miniseries before.3:12If you want the longer version, like even longer version, I would 3:15recommend Armand Assante's miniseries from a number of years ago.3:18Pretty solid.3:20The movie does cover the actual Trojan War, which lasted for 10 years,3:24but the actual Odyssey story itself is everything 3:26that happens right after the Trojan War.3:28So you could look at the movie as like a spiritual sequel 3:31to the Brad Pitt Troy movie, but really big asterisk here.3:35Christopher Nolan's movie isn't literally connected to that movie in any way,3:38and it is vastly superior in every way to the Troy movie.3:42Massive upgrade on every level.3:44Matt Damon is definitely going to be nominated for an Oscar for his performance.3:48My favorite scenes of his, even though they're all great, are both the siren 3:51song, that sequence, and then his speech to his 3:54wife Penelope just before the big final battle.3:56That's probably going to be the one that most people 3:58focus on when they talk about Oscar-worthy performance.4:01By that point in the movie, he completely reckoned with all the terrible things he 4:04and his men had done and has dedicated himself to becoming a better man.4:08So the movie covers what's happening back in Ithaca, his 4:10home, while he is running around trying to make it back home.4:13And there's this moment later in the movie, once Telemachus, his son,4:16has met him and then returned before Penelope, his 4:19wife, realizes Odysseus is still alive and returned.4:22They talk about this growing darkness that Menelaus, played by Jon Bernthal,4:26also in Spider-Man Brand New Day.4:28Like I said, a lot of Spider-Man Brand New Day actors that are in this movie.4:31A dark force, dark army, very bad people that Menelaus warned Telemachus about.4:37A force of men sailing around the seas violating Zeus' laws of hospitality.4:40And Menelaus viewed them as this terrible storm that might soon destroy his home on 4:45Sparta, but his troops were ready for them and he was prepared for it.4:48But back on Ithaca, where Telemachus and Odysseus Penelope are from, they were not.4:53Because they had no king, Odysseus was still missing 4:55for the last 20 years and they had no army to speak of.4:58So Penelope, his wife, is worried about having to deal with the suitors who have 5:02plagued her for the past three years in this dangerous army of darkness and chaos 5:05that are coming to destroy Ithaca at some point.5:08This terrible coming force that they don't know anything about yet.5:15At the end of the movie, during this particular big speech, like one of his 5:18best speeches, Odysseus confesses all the terrible 5:20things that they've done during the Trojan war and after.5:23She's horrified, Penelope is horrified to realize that the coming dark forces that 5:27everybody was worried about going around killing all these people, the sacred laws 5:31of the gods, was actually Odysseus and his men.5:34So it's a very Breaking Bad Walter White kind of reveal 5:37moment, like I am the danger, I am the one who knocks.5:40We were the terrible people that everybody was 5:42worried about going around killing everybody.5:44But because this is happening at the end of the movie, Odysseus at this point has 5:47reckoned with those past misdeeds and has vowed to become a better man.5:51So it winds up being this really beautiful speech bookending 5:54his whole journey and previous two acts of the movie.5:57So when people say the third act really rewards the 6:00first two, this is mostly what they're talking about.6:02This final act where Odysseus finally makes it back home to Ithaca and you see 6:06him in the act of being the better man that he vowed to become along the way.6:10As he also begins to clean up the trash on Ithaca, so to speak, talking about the 6:13suitors and then begins to set things right, sailing off with Penelope to honor 6:17his fallen men like he said he would do to them earlier in the movie because he is 6:21confronted with the literal faces of his past misdeeds and the way that he wronged 6:26people when he goes into the afterlife into Hades.6:29But unlike a lot of big modern epic movies, this movie doesn't let Odysseus 6:33off the hook for all the terrible things that he did during the war.6:36The different characters he runs into along his 6:38journey throw those things back in his face.6:40Literally sometimes his fallen comrades who died for him, the people that he 6:44wronged, people like Calypso and Cersei who forced him to remember and reckon with 6:48the terrible things that he and his men have done.6:50A lot of the movie is also reckoning with what war does to men in general.6:54So Christopher Nolan also makes the movie an allegory 6:57for modern war too and what it does to modern people.7:00You could all draw parallels to all the recent wars around the world.7:03And even though it does take place over 3,000 years ago in the past, he said that 7:07he views the movie, Christopher Nolan views the movie as a spiritual sequel to 7:11Oppenheimer and the way that Oppenheimer himself felt when he saw the reality of 7:16what he created how horrific the destruction was in the 7:19Odyssey then doing something similar with the Trojan war.7:22So the movie is very on the nose with how it addresses this is not subtle at all.7:27Homer's original story is so massive that Odysseus still goes through that whole 7:30character arc, same character arc, but a lot of the time it does feel like 7:33more of an adventure story just because it is so big.7:37Hero was awesome during the Trojan war then just kind of goes through trying to 7:41survive for the next 20 years, makes it home, then does some awesome 7:43revenge things on the suitors and that's the end of it.7:47I'll be back.7:50Whereas Christopher Nolan cut down the story so much so focused that at every 7:54turn is very clear that everything he did was wrong along the way all these terrible 7:58things they did why it was terrible how he specifically 8:01wrong people and what he plans to do to make it right.8:04Just talking about the practical filmmaking 8:06things that were happening during the movie.8:07He said he shot so much footage for the film he could probably erase a 12-hour 8:11version and I would love to see that 12-hour version.8:14It is an absolute beautiful movie like most of his movies.8:17Most the attention is on the use of the special IMAX cameras too.8:20They've been talking about the lot during the press tour and how they constructed a 8:23special box to house it because it is so loud that the 8:26actors can't hear each other when they're using it up close.8:29One of the other diabolical things that they did while they were filming the movie 8:33is that the camera itself only holds three minutes worth of film.8:37So when they were filming, no matter what was happening in any particular scene at 8:41any particular moment that the cut stop after three minutes freeze while they 8:45reloaded the camera then go for another three minutes and they just do it again 8:49bootstrapping their way through an entire day of 8:51filming every single day they were filming the movie.8:54And it took them about six months to film the movie this way.8:58And a lot of the speeches you'll notice in the movie 9:00when you go see it are longer than three minutes.9:02So you have to imagine the actors doing the super emotional or super hardcore 9:05moment that just a record scratch stopping dead in their tracks for like 15 minutes 9:10while they reload the camera to do it again for another three minutes and just 9:13continue through all the scenes day-to-day like this.9:16It sounds like an absolute insane way to film a movie.9:20One of the reasons why the movie does look so beautiful is because they shot most of 9:23it on location not inside a studio with a video walls like the Mandalorian and Grogu.9:27There are visual effects in the movie.9:29Christopher Nolan said the conditions for filming were so grueling along the way 9:33that they actually wrapped the movie something like nine days early and under 9:36budget because they've been going at this hardcore pace for six months and all the 9:39actors physically were on the edge of death by the end and literally could not 9:44continue like everybody working on movie this army people just collapsed at the end.9:48So we just decided enough was enough and that was all they needed as opposed like a 9:52typical big Marvel movie like the Avengers doomsday right now where the actors talk 9:55about it and make it sound like they're filming more of a glorified summer camp.9:59I do feel like the odyssey ending lands in 10:01a really great way like really great payoff.10:04You are rewarded for your time and I think in general a lot of Christopher Nolan's 10:07success as a filmmaker is because he prepares 10:10so thoroughly before they ever start filming.10:12This is why it takes him four to five years to make 10:15a new movie sometimes by the time he's ready to film.10:17He knows exactly what he wants and what he needs from the movie.10:20So it actually takes him less time when you really think about it to film his 10:23movies that like big Marvel movies and even though he does use visual effects.10:27He doesn't have to punish his visual effects 10:29artist to finish their work on the movie.10:30There's very little waste just in general like he said he came in under budget and 10:35under time on the movie which is almost unheard of on these giant big epic movies 10:38in Hollywood by contrast big Marvel movie like Avengers doomsday.10:42They didn't even have a real script when they began filming in the story changes 10:46every single day during filming and they just figure out the movie as they go along 10:50and it is absolute hell on visual effects artist who they make 10:53change all their work a bunch of times by the last minute.10:57I'm about to make a name for myself here.11:00I don't think you guys walk away from this.11:02You just make sure people know what happened here today.11:04All the other actors in the movie were fantastic.11:06Robert Pattinson is like the real main villain of the movie.11:08Although all the suitors are terrible people.11:11He is the ring leader.11:12His death was very satisfying.11:14He understood the assignment be as terrible as possible.11:16Make everybody hate you so they cheer your death.11:19All the rest of the supporting actors were great too.11:21I was surprised Himesh Patel wasn't a bigger part of the marketing though 11:24because he is such a critical part of the movie, especially in the first two acts.11:28But I guess they just want to focus on the bigger A-list stars that they had in the 11:31movie like Matt Damon, Tom Holland and Anne Hathaway.11:34Most of Hollywood was in this movie though.11:36So like you probably will recognize a lot of the people working in this film.11:39I do think the movie does a lot of work in proving to people that Tom Holland does 11:43have a career as an actor outside of Spider-Man.11:46Even though there's so much Spider-Man stuff happening right now.11:49I don't know if I call his performance Oscar worthy, but he's definitely going to 11:52be nominated probably for supporting actor.11:55He also said Sony and Marvel purposefully delayed Spider-Man brand new day just so 11:59he could be in the Odyssey like he had a very 12:01uncomfortable phone call with the president of Sony.12:04Please can you stop filming on Spider-Man like wait to film until I do the Odyssey 12:08which to his credit Sony allowed him to do.12:11So this is the reason why Spider-Man brand new day is coming out at the end of July 12:15instead of the beginning like 4th of July weekend like they would have normally done 12:19all the music in the movie was great.12:21Travis Scott himself also did music for the movie, but also appears as a bard 12:25character during the banquet scenes on Ithaca.12:27So if you wonder why Travis Scott just randomly appears during this movie.12:30That's why all the weird controversy about the movie online 12:34felt kind of ridiculous after actually seeing the movie.12:36I do not think that any of it's going to be an issue.12:39I fully expect the movie to do gangbusters at the box office.12:42I don't know where it's going to fall exactly on Christopher Nolan's own box 12:45office records, but I think it will do totally fine.12:48There's a lot of spoilery stuff that we can get into in my longer breakdown video,12:51but once you do have a chance to see the movie 12:53post all your reactions in
