0:00real NHS interview questions part two0:02now this is part one of the series and0:04in this video I deeply tackled the0:05question how do you manage difficult0:07situations at work which is a very0:09popular NHS interview question so if you0:11haven't seen it check it out on my page0:13so in today's video I'll will be0:15tackling the NHS interview question if0:17you're running late on your list what do0:19you do now this is also another common0:22question that is usually asked because0:24there will be times you know due to0:26several factors that you would want late0:28on your list it could be due to to0:30technical factors it could be due to0:32short staffing in the department it0:34could be due to staff reshuffling as0:36well you know like if someone calls in0:38sick for instance you know in one0:39department so they now need to reshuffle0:42stuff around just so that you could0:43cover for that person who was called in0:45sick so that means that the time it will0:47take me to leave from you know0:48Department a to Department B you know by0:51the time I get to Department B I might0:53have patients already waiting for me and0:55that can cost me to run lat on my list0:57okay and sometimes just in the middle of0:59your list machine or your tools could1:01just malfunction and at that point in1:03time you now have to try sorting that1:05out and in doing that it can cost you to1:07run late on your list and you start1:08having like you know a backlog of1:10patient waiting for you so the reasons1:12can come from anywhere you know I know1:14because of how frequently this can1:15happen it's understandable that this1:17would be a popular interview question1:20because your employers your potential1:21employers or the recruiter wants to know1:23how you would tackle the situation like1:25that how you would manage that kind of1:27situation generally speaking and so I'm1:29here to give give you some insight on1:31how you can potentially tackle a1:32question like this and just in case1:34you're not aware my name is rajo I'm a1:36 sonographer in the UK and on my1:38channel I provide you with insights and1:41tips on how to achieve your dreams as a1:43videographer a sonographer or Healthcare1:46workare in the UK all right so usually1:49at the beginning of the day you normally1:50have like a list of patients that you1:52would be attending to and these patients1:54usually have like allocated time slots1:56you know like almost like appointment1:58times that they actually come to the2:00hospital to be seen right and so if my2:0210:00 patient for instance you know is2:05around is waiting and by 11:00 I've not2:08yet attending to that 10:00 patient then2:10that means that I am running late on my2:12list so these are the things that I2:13would do if I'm running late on my list2:15yeah number one I would remain calm and2:17I would prioritize examinations now I2:20would be prioritizing examinations based2:22on the urgency of the situation and on2:24patients needs so this could mean2:25focusing on those patients who may2:27require urgent or very time sensitive SC2:30you know like patients who have got like2:31acute medical conditions or patients who2:33are in oxygen or patients who are in2:35like debilitating pain I cannot wait for2:38too long in the department or you know2:40infectious patients because because if2:41patients are waiting for me and one of2:43them is infectious then then the longer2:45the Infectious patients stays with other2:47patients the greater the chances of the2:49infection spreading to other people to2:50other patients and other stuff so I2:52could prioritize an infectious patient2:54just to get them back to the world2:56quicker yeah so the first thing I would2:58do would be to stay calm and do my best2:59to prioritize you know examinations3:01based on urgency based on patient needs3:04okay so the second thing that I would do3:06would be to communicate clearly and3:07openly to my patient right so when you3:09communicate with your patient you know3:11trying to explain to them what has3:13happened why there has been a delay in3:15the service or why they have been3:16waiting for this long what it does is it3:19helps the patients to manage their3:21expectations and when the expectations3:23are manage like that it also helps to3:25reduce their anxiety it helps to reduce3:27their frustration because if patients3:29are waiting they are waiting endlessly3:31and nobody's telling them anything I've3:33got a 9:00 appointment how come by 10:003:35I'm not being seen so nobody has talked3:37to them nobody has said anything to them3:39that way they get frustrated they're3:41getting anxious they're getting really3:43really upset and frustrated with whoever3:45it is they supposed to provide the3:47service but if you're able to3:48communicate with them if you tell them3:50you know there's been a technical3:51difficulty my my machine just started to3:53malfunction something happened you know3:56that way it manages their frustration it3:58manages the anx4:00manages their upset and they do not have4:02such huge expectations from you anymore4:04right so communicating with your patient4:06is a no-brain now it's something you4:08cannot compromise on it's something you4:09have to prioritize if your list is4:11running late now the third thing that I4:13would do would be to inform the4:15referring clinicians now this would4:17depend mainly on whatever Department you4:18are posted to like if you're posted to a4:20department where it's an active running4:23clinic maybe it's a One-Stop Clinic4:25where they depending on your results to4:27actually treat a patient or manage a4:29patient in clinics like that W patient4:32where as soon as they get your report4:33they know how to manage the patient so4:35if I'm in a department like that then I4:37would inform the referring clinician now4:39I would inform them you know that there4:40have been significant delays and these4:42are the reasons why um they have been4:44delays and it's beyond me and that's why4:46this is happening or that is happening4:48now when the referring clinicians are4:50informed about delays like this it would4:52help them to manage their own schedule4:54it would also help them to understand4:56what's happening and why they have been4:58delays in their patients returning back5:00to them it would help them in5:02prioritizing their own patient5:03management accordingly as well right so5:06depending on the department that you5:07posted to it might be very very5:09important that you call and you inform5:11the referring clinician about5:13significant delays to the service from5:15your end okay now the fourth thing that5:18I would do would be to streamline the5:20workflow and this basically means that5:22if I'm experiencing delays yeah I would5:24assess the workflow in the department5:26and identify different areas where5:28efficiencies can be improved and I'll5:30have to do that as quickly as possible5:32now to do this it may involve delegating5:34like non-clinical taxs to support5:36workers to the healthare assistant you5:38know or to other admin staff whatever we5:40can do to just help the service move on5:42a little bit quicker because we're5:43already experiencing delays so while the5:45support staff are focusing on some5:47nonclinical things I can be focusing on5:49the clinical things streamlining the5:50workflow could also be about optimizing5:52your equipment preparation and your5:54equipment setup basically you know5:56whatever it is that I can do to just5:59make the service run a little bit6:00quicker a little bit better I would do6:03that and that's what streamlining the6:04workflow basically means okay the next6:07thing that I would do would be to seek6:08assistance if necessary now if I'm6:10experiencing delays and the delay is6:12significant or I'm experiencing some6:14unexpected challenges then I will not6:17hesitate to seek assistance from my6:18colleagues from supervisors from the6:20manager whoever it is that I need to6:22seek assistance from because6:24collaborating with others can just help6:25to redistribute the workload and by6:28redistributing the workload will6:29expedite the process as well leading to6:32very minimal disruptions in patient care6:34okay because if there's a huge chunk of6:36work to do and it is broken into pieces6:38and given to different people that means6:40we can all do it faster and we can help6:42the patients get their care as quickly6:44as possible so seeking assistance if6:47necessary is something that I would do6:48if I'm running late on my list and the6:50six thing that I would do if I'm running6:51late on my list would be to maintain6:53professionalism and compassion now6:55throughout the process while I'm trying6:57to tackle the situation manage the6:58situation efficiently I would prioritize7:01professionalism I would prioritize7:02compassion and I will prioritize patient7:05centered care it's got to be all about7:07the patient at this point in time and7:09one way to demonstrate compassion is to7:10acknowledge the inconvenience caused by7:12the delay to the patient so by the time7:14you acknowledge this to your patient and7:16then you reassure your patient that7:18regardless of everything that is7:19happening their well-being is a priority7:21to you that way the patients feel more7:24at ease they are happier and they7:26understand that regardless of how long7:28it takes when it gets to to their turn7:30you're not going to rush their scan7:31you're not going to rush the process7:33because you understand that their7:34well-being is still a priority7:36regardless of the setbacks so7:37acknowledging and even apologizing to7:40the patient is a very good step in this7:41direction of you know maintaining7:43professionalism and compassion and7:45patient centered care patients want to7:47know that they are valued at all times7:48so it is within our responsibility to7:50demonstrate this regardless of whatever7:52setbacks that we are facing now after7:55all has been said and done and we've you7:57know gone through the list and try to7:58manage this ation the seventh thing that8:00I would do would be to reflect on8:02everything that has happened and to8:04improve where possible so after8:06addressing the immediate concerns I8:08would take the time to reflect on all8:09the factors that have contributed to the8:11delay and identify areas for improvement8:14and this may involve evaluating the work8:16through practices trying to understand8:18the root of the delay in the first place8:19was it an equipment malfunction what8:21happened did this happen before was it8:23reported before I have to report it now8:26right it's happened with me and so I8:28have to report this to the relev8:29Personnel so that they can look into it8:31so that a delay like this does not8:33happen in the future because the last8:34thing you want to do is put your8:35patients through this and then put them8:37through this again you don't want to do8:39that a second time so if I have to8:41report this I have to follow the8:42necessary channels report an equipment8:44malfunction if the delay was as a result8:47of Staff shortages then I mean there's8:49not much that I can do about that but8:50considering everything that would have8:52ensued the managers would be aware of8:54this and hopefully you know they put8:56measures in place to not let this happen8:58again maybe by recruiting more staff or9:01implementing other strategies that can9:02help with preventing stuff like that in9:04the future and if I've got any ideas if9:06I've been able to bring so many ideas9:08that can help the management to sort out9:10stuff like this then I'll put it forward9:11to my management okay so just a recap9:13yeah if I'm running late on my list I9:15would prioritize examinations you know9:17based on urgency and based on the9:19patient's need right okay and then9:21number two I would communicate with the9:23patient very clearly very openly very9:25transparently this cannot be9:27overemphasized yeah and then number9:29three depending on where I'm working I9:31would inform the referring clinicians9:33just so that they can also adjust their9:34schedules accordingly yeah and then9:36number four I will streamline the9:38workflow look for any areas of9:40inefficiencies and try to improve them9:42as quickly as possible and then number9:44five I will seek assistance if necessary9:46because this can just help to expedite9:48the process and reduce patient delays9:50okay and then number six I will maintain9:53professionalism and compassion and9:55patient centered care throughout the9:57entire ordal right and then number seven10:00after all has been said and done I will10:02reflect on the entire situation and try10:04to identify areas for improvement okay10:07so this are the things that I would do10:09now what would you do you know I like to10:10hear from your experience so you could10:12just drop a comment below I'm sure that10:14I can learn from me and others can learn10:16from me as well
