Therapy in a Nutshell
0:00When I learned about complex PTSD, I0:03understood that I was disregulated. I0:05had been disregulated the whole time.0:07James Pennebaker, the professor of0:09psychology, invited his grad students,0:11"Here, try this. Write about the worst0:13thing that ever happened to you for 150:14minutes 4 days in a row."0:16And he measured them before and after,0:17and not only did they feel better, but0:19their blood composition changed, and it0:21stayed changed 30 days later. It was0:24very effective. There's something about0:26writing and expressing the pain about0:27something0:28Yeah.0:29that does help us process it.0:31Mhm.0:32And then I took this course in the0:34neurobiology of trauma. It turns out0:37it's scientifically validated that the0:39early trauma injures your ability to0:42process thoughts and feelings. They0:43literally get jammed up in your0:45consciousness. And so, for me, what0:48ended up breaking the cycle very quickly0:50was when I learned to write about it.
