0:01the second law is the law of influence0:06and the law of influence says the true0:10measure of leadership is influence0:13nothing more nothing less0:16I love this law and when I teach it I0:19find sometimes it throws an emotional0:23curve to people let me explain to you0:25what I mean you see the law of influence0:27says leadership is is influenced nothing0:29more nothing less I find most people0:31want to attach other definitions to0:33leadership they want to say things like0:35Jon I think leadership is title and by0:37the way I have a leadership title or I0:40think leadership is position and by the0:42way I have a leadership position I find0:44that a lot of people want to tie all0:45kinds of definitions into leadership but0:47let me just tell you leadership is0:49influence nothing more nothing less let0:51me explain it this way the person with0:53the most influence at any given time for0:57any given reason in any given group is1:00the leader of the pack now what that1:04means is there are times when influence1:06changes there's times when one person1:08will have more influence than another1:09but when you get on to another issue or1:11another subject that another person may1:12that that leadership may shift a little1:14bit because we are not all strong in all1:17areas and so therefore when I'm talking1:19about leadership is influence what it1:20shows is there is a fluid 'no sub1:22leadership and that leadership doesn't1:23always stay with one person in fact let1:25me give you a perfect example this as we1:28studied together the 21 irrefutable laws1:30of leadership one of the first things1:31you're gonna realize is this you do not1:34do well in all 21 laws okay and for1:39those that are in the studio today I1:40just want you to know you won't do well1:42on all 21 laws now here's what's gonna1:45happen if you evaluate yourself on each1:46law here's what's gonna happen1:47you're going to have a tendency to think1:49that when you do well on a law you're1:53going to say to yourself now that is a1:56true law of leadership2:01they're all John's right on there oh2:05that is so good he's just that's that's2:07it that is true and in the end all the2:09walls that you don't do so well you're2:11gonna say that may not be a law of2:14leadership now what you're going to2:16fight is you're gonna do well on some2:17laws you're going to not do well on some2:19laws hey that's where it is in fact2:20there going to be some laws I'll point2:21them out to you that I don't do well on2:23now here's what I want you to see that's2:26why it's important for you not only to2:27understand leadership but that's why2:29it's important for you to have a2:29leadership team that's why it's2:31important for you to Train leaders2:32around you and here's why in fact I have2:35seen over the last three decades in the2:3780s I saw that the great word was2:39management everybody talked about2:40management Peter Drucker did some great2:42things on management when we got to the2:4390s the the in corporate America it2:46changed from management to leadership2:48now there's a reason for that2:50see managers assume things will always2:52stay the same leaders assume things will2:54always change and so in the 80s when2:58things were stable Wow we needed3:01managers to kind of control and to make3:03sure everything was everything was being3:04taken care of in the 90s when we got the3:06leadership all of a sudden it3:07drastically changed and we needed a guys3:10and gals and men and women to that that3:12were fast paced and and could change and3:14an embrace change and I can tell you as3:18now we've entered into a whole new3:19center I can promise you3:20we've gone from management in the 80s to3:24leadership of the 90s to now I can tell3:25you we're going as we as we've entered3:27in a whole new not only decade but a3:29whole new century we're going now to3:31team leadership and the reason we're3:33going to team leadership is because the3:3421 irrefutable awesome leadership will3:36teach you and me very simply that you3:38just don't do all 21 things well you3:42don't I don't now the moment we3:44understand that I've got to have a3:46leadership team and the reason I have to3:48have a leadership team is because I need3:49people around me that can absolutely3:52make up for my weaknesses and can3:55compliment me does that make sense so3:57for example is we're teaching through3:59here here's why don't you see as I4:01walked down here and just kind of use it4:02maybe my front row for an example4:04because this will work let's say let's4:05say for example this is my leadership4:07team my name is John what's your name4:08okay Chuck perfect let's say let's say4:11we're in one of the laws and let's say4:13Chuck4:13a better job at one of the walls than I4:15do one of the reasons we need to know4:17evaluate ourselves in one the reasons we4:18we need to have a leadership team around4:20us is because we all need to know that4:22if I get to the law of navigation by the4:23way that's a law teach later on that's a4:25law I'm weakened I'm not a good4:27navigator what I have to realize is but4:29let's say chuck is a I'm a I'm a what am4:31i AMA to as a navigator okay and we just4:34trust me you don't want me to navigate4:36I'm okay I'm kind of like mr. Magoo okay4:38so you don't want that you know you know4:40what mr. Magoo running this and running4:42it and run the ship now but Chuck let's4:44say he's a 9 what that means is when we4:47get to something in our organization4:48that requires navigating what we do is I4:51take and and now Chuck has more4:54influence because if you know Chuck's a4:56better navigator than me who you gonna4:58follow see for too long we've said5:01follow me because I have the position5:03how ridiculous follow me because I have5:07the title I'm the president I'm you know5:08I I i I'm the one that's over everybody5:11follow me that's not a good reason to5:12follow somebody you gotta follow a5:14person because they're competent you5:16gotta follow person because they're best5:17and the secure leaders and I'll talk5:19about the law of empowerment that's5:21another law but the secure leaders look5:22around and say look gang let me tell you5:24something Chuck's a better navigator5:25than me so when it comes to navigating5:29the day-to-day process and we've got to5:31navigate maybe for a three six month5:32period on something some issue in the5:34organization Chuck's gonna have the ball5:36and I'm going to follow Chuck because5:38all great leaders are not on leaders5:40they're great followers because they5:43appreciate the value that true5:45leadership brings does that make sense5:47so leadership is influence I may have5:50influence in some areas Chuck will have5:53influence in other areas what's your5:54name Bridgette will have influence in5:56other words the person that is the best5:58leader should have the most influence in6:01that given area makes sense so look6:04around you and ask yourself who is6:05influential and in what areas are they6:08influential that's why that's why6:11several years ago I designed a way for6:17people to understand influence as it6:19pertains the leadership that would make6:22sense to them and in your notes if6:24you'll take just a moment for me6:26I want to draw your attention to the6:30five levels of leadership and we're not6:33use the word leadership I could use the6:34word influence that I use them6:35interchangeably and what I want to do is6:37I want to walk you through this because6:38this is essential for you to understand6:41where you are as far what level of6:43influence you have and where you should6:45go to increase your influence level for6:48example let's go down to the very bottom6:49step okay on that first lowest level put6:54the word position now that's the lowest6:58level of influence that's the lowest6:59level of leadership in other words when7:00you and I go to an organization we get a7:02title we get a position now right inside7:07that step is another blank I encourage7:10you to put the word rights because7:12that's the key word when you're on the7:15position level of leadership let me7:16explain when you and I have a title when7:19you and I have a position we get certain7:21rights that come with the position is7:23that true don't look I just say you're7:24gonna be over these six people this is7:26gonna be your department these are your7:27people that you're responsible for okay7:28okay7:29in other words at level number one7:31people follow you because they have to7:36in other words people say yeah why are7:38you following that person well it's7:40because they're the boss they're the7:42leader I have to in other words I'm7:43under them I really don't have any7:45choice now let me share something with7:46you every one of us in the studio every7:49one of you that that watch me do the7:51leadership training anybody that's7:52that's that's just observing what I'm7:54saying right now and understanding is7:55levels leadership every one of us have7:58had to follow people that weren't good8:01leaders in that true how many of you8:04just we don't need to call out names8:07okay let's not get personal here how8:08many of you have at one time in your8:10business life or your work life had to8:12follow somebody and they were just a8:14lousy leader huh I mean there's absolute8:16go that's that's how to percent in the8:18studio optimum ask you this question how8:20many of you are sitting beside that8:22person right now8:26don't go there don't go there don't got8:28it the first question is a leadership8:30question the second question is IQ8:32question okay8:33yeah don't raise your hand on the second8:37one now that would not be a good that8:38would not be a good thing okay now8:40here's what I'm saying everyone else8:41have had to follow people that were not8:44good leaders why because they had the8:47position in title this year I'm going to8:49be speaking to the West Point I'm coming8:52in for two and a half days I'm going to8:53be speaking to all the cadets I'm going8:54to be speaking to the leadership and8:55they want me to talk about the 21 of you8:57the balls of leadership because they8:58teach it there what's interesting is my9:01challenge as I go to West Point will be9:02I'm going to teach the 21 irrefutable9:04laws of leadership and so much of the9:07service area is based on rank9:09and what they're going to have to9:10understand what I'm going to do my best9:12to teach them of course they're very9:13very sharp so they're gonna understand9:14it very quickly probably much better9:15than I ever could does gonna have to9:17understand that just because people9:19follow you because you have a position9:20does it mean that you're a great leader9:23does that make sense9:25level number two is the permission level9:27let me walk you through the rest of9:28these very quickly and the key word on9:31the inside of level number two is9:33relationships at level number two people9:36follow you because they want to and by9:41the way just stop for a moment and look9:43at your notes there's a world of9:45difference between one and two in step9:47number one people follow you because9:49they have to in step number two people9:50follow you because they want to because9:52now you developed relationships with9:54them level number three is the9:56production level and the key word is9:59results basically what I'm saying at10:02level number three is this at level10:03number three people follow you because10:06of what you've done for the organization10:08and in other words it's growing have the10:11profits better the morale is higher okay10:14now all of a sudden people are following10:15you because you've been successful in10:17the organization that's level three10:19level number four is the people10:21development level that's always my goal10:23when we talk about a couple of the laws10:25of of leadership I'll talk more about10:27people development but at people10:29development the key word is reproduction10:30oh yes people follow you there because10:35of what you have done for them10:37what you have done for them as10:38individuals in other words on level10:40number three they follow you because of10:41results and what you've done for the10:43company at level number four they follow10:44you because of what you have done for10:45them now they're personally growing now10:47they could say I'm a better person I'm10:49I'm more effective in my job because10:51you've equipped them you giving them10:52tools in the last level is what I call10:55the personhood level and the key word10:58there is respect and basically you have11:01done it so well with so many people for11:03so long that people just automatically11:06put you up there so it's a wonderful11:07level to be on and I would encourage you11:11on law number two just to take some time11:13and look at the questions and ask11:15yourself questions about influence and11:18how you can more effectively influence11:20others the five levels of leadership11:22which is a which is a lecture itself has11:25it has its own training video because I11:27spend a great deal of time really11:29helping people work through those five11:30laws but for right now the law of11:32influence says there are five levels of11:34influence and you need to know where you11:36are because leadership is influenced11:38nothing more nothing less
