0:00Like, I think one of the
greatest casting talents,0:02finding an evil-looking child.0:03Like, this child knows your
Aadhaar number, okay?0:08The ghost shows up when you're bathing.
What kind of logic is that?0:10Because if you had not known0:11the touch of another human being,
for 200 years,0:14would you not be just a little perverted?0:16I'm not even dead for 200 years.0:20For 20 seconds, the screen remains black.0:22Suddenly there's this…0:24-Family dynamics is a horror genre.
-Yes!0:27If you sit with a group
to watch a horror film,0:30then you have that one friend…0:34Basically, Bhoot Dadi was
just the Bijli lady from Swades.0:38-Bijli Dadi--
-with less bijli.0:4013B: Fear Has a New Address.0:44Written by Abhinav Kashyap? What?0:48Like the Kashyap brothers have contributed0:49a lot to the horror scene,
including podcasts.0:54And the 4ft.-tall man.1:05Friends, a very warm welcome.
The show's name is Dekh Bhais,1:07The original Bhai's
of this show are here today.1:11Rohan bhai is with us.
We started this show1:13so we could spend
more time with each other.1:16There are two genres
about which I have very little knowledge.1:21The first one is horror,1:22and the second one is science fiction.1:23And today, we are going
to talk about horror films.1:25It's my opinion that I'd
like to share at the start,1:27that I don't like watching horror movies1:30because I don't feel scared,
or if I do, I don't want to experience it.1:33I watch horror movies
because I get scared, and I enjoy it.1:37Because there is also the fact that,
as a child,1:40you're like,
'Oh my God, ghosts, etc., so scary.'1:43Then you grow up, and you're like,
"Oh my God, the real world is so scary".1:47Because the thing with
ghosts is, right? Like with horror,1:50once the movie ends, the horror stops.1:52-…but in life, the movie never ends.
-Exactly!1:55Exactly, that's why.1:57See, I have two kinds of
horror viewers around me.1:59Some people, like my mom,
get scared, but they also enjoy it a lot.2:03-They want something to scare them.
-I'm exactly like your mom in that case.2:06But tell me, why are
horror movies watched?2:09Horror is actually the oldest film genre,2:11and it's the first emotion experienced
by people while watching a movie.2:15When people talk
about the Lumière brothers,2:17the very first film was about
a train arriving at a station.2:21And the first response of people2:22when that train was
coming towards the screen,2:24-they thought a real train was coming.
-It will come out.2:26And they all got scared and ran away.2:28So, horror is literally one of the first
emotions that has been felt on screen.2:33-Right.
-Till today, there's nothing in a movie2:35like a jump scare.2:37There's no other emotion and also again,2:39I love any genre where
the metaphor can be very strong.2:43Like Night of the Living Dead
is a racism metaphor.2:45Dawn of the Dead
is an American consumerism metaphor.2:48-Watch Stree, right?
-Yes.2:50So, Stree is essentially,
the metaphor is almost like…2:52like, essentially feminism, right?2:53-It's a feminist metaphor. Patriarchy.
-Right. The patriarchy is…2:55-Patriarchy is the horror thing in that.
-Exactly.2:57So what is the topmost one for you?2:59I'll tell you from my memory,3:01that you genuinely remember
getting scared in this scene.3:04-Brother, I will tell you.
-Which film is that?3:05I had one of life's most beautiful companions.3:09It's called having an older sister.3:12I have an older sister,
and my older sister,3:15-seven years older than me…
-I relate to that,3:16-I also have an elder sister.
-Yes, so, elder sister,3:19100% best companion,
but did not want to watch3:23-a horror movie alone.
-Alone.3:24-And when you can have someone
-Who is your best partner?3:26sitting in the room with you.3:28Who better than your
impressionable 9-year-old brother?3:32to sit there in the room with you
and hold your hand?3:36And he has no idea
what is coming his way, okay?3:39So, I actually watched
my first horror film like this.3:41-Oh my god.
-Okay, so this happened.3:43There was this wild film called The Omen.3:47-This was in 1976.
-All time. Yeah, yeah, 1976.3:49So, you were 9 years old in 1976?3:51I was 20 in 1976, please. Right?3:54And one thing
about the film is the evil child.3:57-American ambassador to Britain and
-Yeah, there you go.3:59-…raising the Antichrist.
-Maybe raising the Antichrist, okay?4:04It has a 7.0 rating
and an incredible cast.4:06Like, I still remember
it's first scene was that,4:09a children's party is going on. Okay?4:11In the lawn,
all the kids are playing, this and that.4:13With this child is his babysitter,
and then a dog like this appears.4:17And that babysitter looks at that dog.4:19And then it just cuts to a normal party,
they're enjoying it.4:22In the next shot,4:23the babysitter's on the roof
and she jumps and she hangs herself.4:27And I'm just like…4:29there we go.4:30That's the first scene.4:32That's the first scene
of the movie, okay! And,4:35like, I think one of the greatest casting
talents in the world.4:38-Is the baby.
-Is finding an evil-looking child.4:41-Oh my god.
-Okay?4:42I think it's one of the
greatest, most heroic jobs in casting.4:45-Brother, what is this?
-Look at that, dude.4:47-Look at that.
-This child is in my house…4:49He's the greatest, Harvey Stephens.4:50I'm sure you have grown up
to be a respectable young man.4:53Or now, a respectable old man,
given this is from 1976.4:55Brother, I don't think
he worked after this,4:57because only his childhood
photo is showing up.5:00Brother, what is this?5:02Like, this child knows your
Aadhaar number, okay?5:06You never told it to him, but he knows it.5:08This child knows where
all your dirtiest WhatsApp chats are.5:13-What is this, brother? I got scared.
-Exactly.5:15When this child comes, people go, “Salaam Sahab”.5:18I think this movie is the reason
I don't want to have children.5:22I was like, "What if I accidentally
raise the Antichrist?"5:26I don't think I could deal
with that responsibility.5:29-So, I saw this first in my childhood.
-Wow, I really enjoyed this.5:32-And…
-What a thing.5:33Oh, and the musical score is amazing.5:35That's what I'm saying,
the music in horror films…5:38I remember, The Conjuring.5:41I grew up watching The Conjuring.
In Conjuring, it was like, yes,5:43I'm watching secretly, yes, I'm watching.
Then a scene from The Conjuring comes.6:01Brother, my condition became so bad,6:03-I don't know when it happened. Oh my god!
-Exactly.6:06What happened, brother?
Who would think of that?6:09Who made this? Oh brother.6:10I mean, the most horrific part6:12about this movie was
the 15 terrible sequels that they made.6:15-Yes, after this, they kept going.
-Not required at all.6:18But this movie was great fun.6:20I think horror films
have a very basic template.6:22You might say Rom-Coms
also have the same template.6:25Why is there a template?
They go to a house,6:26and there is a story to it.6:28And brother,
I'm saying, if you go to that house,6:29don't go to the basement.6:31-Did someone say that?
-This is exactly why flats are better.6:34Apartment is best.6:35-This is why apartment is best in Mumbai.
-There is a crazy apartment horror film6:38that I will tell you about, which I…6:40-Are you going to show me 13B?
-Yes!6:42-Oh yeah! I love 13B.
-Let's go 13B.6:44-I love 13B, brother.
-What a great film, dude.6:47-I saw this in the theater.
-Oh Brother!6:49-Great film!
-And there is no ghost in this.6:51-You can feel the things.
-The thing is, the real monster is you.6:53-Is you, brother.
-The old show that plays on their TV,6:57"Sab Khairiyat Hai".
-Exactly, brother.7:07And in this,
Deepak Dobriyal has a character,7:10the guy who…
The old brother who is alive.7:12-Yes, correct!
-Oh my!7:16And also, look, a good horror movie
has to have a good tagline, right?7:19-Yeah, yeah.
-13B: Fear Has a New Address.7:23Come on.7:25Writer, Abhinav Kashyap. What?7:27Hey! Hey! Hey!7:30In honor of Abhinav Kashyap,
I will sit like this now.7:34I will sit like this
for the rest of the episode7:36in honor of Abhinav Kashyap,7:39-amazing, sir. A very good film.7:42-and a 4-foot-tall man.7:48-Oh my, brother.
-That's crazy.7:50I cannot believe okay, that's great.
While we're on apartments, okay,7:54I have to shout out to one of my
all-time favorite horror movies, Bhoot,7:58by Ram Gopal Varma.
The plot is very simple, okay?8:01Ajay Devgn and Urmila Matondkar
move into this apartment.8:03Ajay Devgn everyday leaves for work,
etc., whatever.8:06Urmila is there…
and she keeps seeing a ghost.8:10And it's the ghost… I still remember
the name of the ghost is…8:12Manjeet.8:14-I know, not the most ghostly name.
-Manjeet.8:17Just go with it, okay?
The ghost's name is Manjeet,8:19and again, it's one of those horror movies
where the bhoot is not the scary thing.8:22The bhoot wants
Urmila's help in solving her murder.8:26Oh my.8:27And again, the thing that breaks my
brain when you watch this movie is,8:30bro, what a cast.8:32Like, there's one scene where at
the same time, you have Ajay Devgn,8:36you have Urmila Matondkar,8:38you have Victor Banerjee, you have Nana
Patekar, Seema Biswas, and you have Rekha,8:42all together in one scene.8:45Dude 2003 RGV is like peak RGV.8:48-He had…
-There's another movie called "Kaun".8:50Correct "Kaun" is an all-time great,
written by Anurag Kashyap.8:53Like, the Kashyap brothers
have contributed8:55-a lot to the horror scene in India.
-Including podcasts!8:58-But…
-and box offices.9:01And box offices.9:02Since we're talking about
the Kashyap brothers,9:04-If you talk about horror in India.
-Okay.9:06You cannot do it without the OGs
of the game, the Ramsay brothers.9:11-Gordon Ramsay?
-Not Gordon Ramsay.9:13Keshu Ramsay, bro.9:15First, to give you a
little context of Ramsay.9:16Ramsay brothers used
to make horror in India9:18when horror was like
one of those laughed-at genres.9:20So, they have made those extreme
low-budget "bhoot bangla" movies.9:24There was a movie called "Band Darwaza",9:26which was a vampire movie, okay, in India.9:29So, in 1990, The Closed door.9:30-I will say this, brother.
-There we go.9:32"Band Darwaza".
Look at the poster. Come on.9:35Now, that, tell me that
isn't a classic horror poster.9:38It has all the elements, all right?9:40It's got this vampiry-looking
guy on top,9:42It's got a couple
making out at the bottom,9:44essential to a good horror film,
all right?9:46-Integral.
-Why is it like this?9:47Integral. All right?9:48The ghost appears while
bathing. What's the method?9:50Because ghosts are perverts, all right?9:53If you had been dead for 200 years,9:56and you had not known
the touch of another human being,9:59would you not be just a little perverted?10:01I'm not even dead for 200 years.10:04Still.10:08Look at this photo.
There's a ghost sitting in the middle.10:11Exactly, there we go.10:13Listen, ghost, here's what you got to do
in the next scene, all right?10:16This woman is in the shower.10:18-What you got to do…
-Brother, shit man.10:20Crazy. Veerana,
yes, I have heard of Veerana.10:22Veerana was a very popular one, but,10:24since we are here,
we must go to the Zee Horror Show.10:27Zee Horror Show, okay,
was incredibly cheesy,10:31incredibly made with
the most basic effects,10:33but it blew my mind.
First of all, just click on the image.10:36Now, if that is not a classic 90s graphic…10:40off red, dripping blood,10:42-The Zee Horror Show.
-It has an 8.1 rating.10:46And 100%, as it should be.10:48And down there is another
put respect on it's name, "Aahat".10:51I've also seen Aahat, during my childhood.10:53Aahat, bro.
Aahat is the Indian Twilight Zone.10:561995 to 2015 is crazy.11:01Aahat having a lower rating than
Zee Horror Show to me is controversial11:06-and unacceptable.
-Then I grew up with Sssshhh… Koi Hai.11:10-Sssshhh… Koi Hai was fun, brother.
-This was my thing when I was growing up.11:13-One second.
-What happened?11:14Sssshhh… Koi Hai also has
a higher rating than Aahat.11:18Is taste dead in this world?
Is that what has happened?11:20No problem, no problem.11:22Coming back to real horror films.11:23-After The Omen, what's next?
-So this happened.11:27After that, I discovered
a writer called Stephen King.11:30He has this horrible curse where he's
had the most adaptations of his movies,11:35but most of them are terrible.11:37Some of them are bangers, okay?
The Shawshank Redemption,11:39not a horror movie, but…11:41-The Shawshank Redemption is a Stephen King story?
-Is a Stephen King story, yeah, yes.11:43The Shawshank Redemption
is a Stephen King story.11:45Then, there's this amazing,
amazing movie called The Shining.11:49-What is the premise of The Shining?
-It's about an alcoholic,11:52abusiveish father
trying to stay sane…11:56and failing11:57essentially against the forces of evil.12:01Go down to the trivia, I'm very curious
to see if it's mentioned over here.12:04Stephen King's12:05-dissatisfaction with the movie,
-There we go.12:07adaptation of "The Shining" led him to
re-adapt the novel into a 1997 mini-series12:10that remained closer to his original work.12:12However, because Warner Brothers12:14held the rights to the film,12:15King had to sign a contract with
the studio agreeing to refrain from making12:19-frequent public criticism.
-Yes.12:20…of Kubrick's version.
Stephen King's adaptation,12:22The Shining (1997)
is widely regarded as inferior to…12:25And they are absolutely right.12:27Have you read the book
and watched the movie?12:29-I've read the book and watched the movie.
-What's the difference?12:30They are quite different in the sense
that like the Jack Nicholson character12:35-is a little more sympathetic in the book.
-Okay.12:37My favorite Shining this thing,
again, you all can look it up.12:39A great rabbit hole to go down in is,12:42there's a whole group
of conspiracy theorists that believe12:45that Stanley Kubrick in The Shining,12:47hid numerous Easter eggs and references,12:51to suggest that he was indeed
the one who had faked the moon landing,12:56on the Apollo mission.12:57I don't think that's true.12:59There's a whole, this is an actual
rabbit hole you can go down, okay?13:02It's absolutely wild. It's a great rabbit
hole if anybody wants to go down.13:05This is a very fun rabbit hole to go down13:07if you are bored and if you want to see
how bored other people can be13:11when it comes to certain things.13:12-Any other Stephen King movies?
-Yes, there is one more.13:15There's a director, Frank Darabont.13:16He made an adaptation of13:18one of Stephen King's
short stories called The Mist.13:21-This one.
-Yeah, Thomas Jane and Marcia Gay Harden.13:23So, Stephen King's whole thing is,
again, why I love Stephen King. And again,13:26why is horror a good genre?
Because sometimes,13:28the best horror movies are just,13:30"What if a bunch of people got
trapped in really horrible circumstances?13:34How would they turn on each other"?13:35A lot of Stephen King's
this thing is just,13:38society is fragile.13:39All it takes is people to be
trapped in four bad circumstances,13:43and things start unraveling very,
very quickly.13:45And yes, there we go. Reviewers say,13:47The Mist stands as one of the
strongest Stephen King adaptations.13:49-Wow.
-Yeah.13:50But does Stephen King say that?13:52-Yeah, Stephen King likes this movie.
-I think he has to like it.13:55He must be thinking,
"I can't make another one".13:57I can't do it anymore, brother.13:59-I won't get money from Warner Brothers…
-I can't do another one.14:01But this is a common trope
in horror films, right?14:04Where four or five friends go to a villa,
and one of them doesn't believe in ghosts.14:08He is the first one to die.14:09And it's top example is The Evil Dead.14:13-Oh, I have also seen The Evil Dead.
-The Evil Dead, by a man called Sam Raimi,14:18who would then go on to direct,14:20as a natural successor to The Evil Dead,
Spider-Man.14:25As one does.14:26This one must have come
from The Evil Dead template,14:28the five friends one,
where five friends go…14:30So, it's one of the first.
Five people go to a cabin,14:33and this happens in the cabin.14:35And the crazy thing is, okay?
The Evil Dead was made,14:37after that, Evil Dead II was made.14:38Which, if you watch is literally just,14:40The Evil Dead made again,
but with a bigger budget.14:42And it used a lot of
stop-motion effects for the first time.14:47Lots of practical effects,
lots of blood. Also,14:51one of the… Evil Dead is responsible
for the origin of the horror-comedy genre.14:56Because aside from the fact
that it was gross and genuinely scary,14:59it was also hilarious.15:08And the main guy in it, Bruce Campbell,15:11he plays this character called Ash.15:13And Ash essentially
became like this hero icon.15:17Because what happens to him in the movie,
he goes through many things.15:19He ends up losing an arm.15:21And then, I think, one of
the greatest hero moves of all time,15:25where he's lost the arm,
straps a chainsaw to it.15:44And then in the third movie,15:46he goes back into like ancient Egypt
or ancient Rome or something like that.15:50And after that, a show was also made,15:51called Ash vs. The Evil Dead.15:53-Dhurandhar, Dhurandhar Revenge.
-Dhurandhar, Dhurandhar Revenge.15:55-Dhurandhar versus In…
-Hamza versus…15:57-Hamza versus Alam.
-Alam versus Hamza16:00The original script called
for all characters to be smoking marijuana16:03when they're first listening to the tape.16:05The actors decided to try this for real,16:07and the entire scene had to be
re-shot due to their uncontrollable…16:13Stop eating the fake blood!16:15Stop eating the fake blood, guys! Stop it.16:18But there we go, they were
the main ingredients of fake blood,16:21in case anybody's shooting their
own horror movie at home. Karo syrup,16:24non-dairy creamer,
and lots of food coloring.16:27At one point, Bruce Campbell's shirt
that he wears in the film was so saturated16:30with the fake blood
that after drying it by fire,16:33the shirt became solidified and
broke when he tried to put it on.16:36Damn, like a 16-year-old's bedsheet.16:39Nice. Body horror,16:41I just want to see what else is
there in the IMDb body horror list.16:45Oh, that's an image from The Fly,
by the way, David Cronenberg's The Fly.16:49-Which one?
-Outstanding movie.16:50The top image? Go all the way to the top.16:52Crazy movie, brother.16:53A guy invents one of those,
you know, ultimate holy grails of science,16:56a transporter device,
except one day when he's testing it,16:59a fly goes into the chamber with him.17:01And their DNA gets mixed up,17:04and he slowly starts
transforming into a gigantic fly.17:07Oh my god.17:08It's essentially Kafka's
Metamorphosis turned into like…17:11-Crazy, brother.
-…extra massive, terrible horror.17:14This one, I also have a crazy body horror.17:16-The Substance.
-Oh my.17:18The entire movie is on one side, and
the last 15 minutes are on the other.17:21Yes, agreed.17:22It's like,
"How much body horror do you want"?17:24-Yes.
-Yes.17:26-That is The Substance, 100%.
-The makeup artists for that…17:29-Oh my!
-They did win an award.17:32I'm like, everything is okay until a
creature gets more than two eyes.17:38The second a third
or fourth eye comes into the picture…17:42Something happens to me, brother.
I can't take it.17:44In the end, you were like,
"Fill it up, brother.17:46-Bring the clamp, bring the clay".
-Oh my god.17:52In this, I saw Tumbbad.17:53-Dude, Tumbbad is an all-time film.
-Tumbbad is a good body horror.17:56This is a proper folklore
and that kind of horror.17:59Tumbbad is the horror film I like.18:01Tumbbad is beautiful.18:02-It also looks beautiful.
-It looks beautiful,18:04-the world-setting is very good.
-It looks stunning. It's so good.18:07And again, that story, right? The
idea is the real horror is your greed.18:10Greed. Yeah, yeah, exactly.18:11And how you live in that situation.18:14-Like, Hastar is just…
-Hastar is a side character.18:18Brother, Hastar was very cute.18:22The grandmother is cute
when she turns into a ghost.18:25I mean, Bhoot Dadi was…18:26dude, basically Bhoot Dadi was
just the Bijli lady from Swades,18:31but with like, an extra 20 years added.18:33Grandma, go to sleep.
The ration will run out!18:40When I first saw her,18:41I was like, "Oh, she still
hasn't gotten electricity".18:43-Bijli Dadi with more dialogue.
-With less electricity.18:46This is Bijli Dadi with less electricity.18:48-Now your oxygen will also be taken away.
-Like, yes.18:51Now your oxygen is gone,
and you've also been cursed.18:54Exactly. Brother,
Tumbbad, add to watchlist.18:56-Outstanding film.
-Yes, add Tumbbad to the watchlist, bro.18:58-And let's move on.
-So since you also said folktale, right?19:00And it's a folk… Folk horror19:02is a great genre. Can you please
look up the subgenre of folk horror?19:07The Witch.19:08The full title is The Witch:
A New-England Folktale.19:12And this is a great movie because it's
Anya Taylor-Joy, who is an amazing actor,19:18and the guy who plays her younger brother,19:20I think, gives one of
the greatest performances19:23I have ever seen from a child actor.19:25-This one, this guy?
-This very child. Lucas Dawson.19:28He is so good, this kid in the movie.
There's one scene of his.19:41And I can't believe19:43that a child actor did this in one take.19:47And the movie is just basically
one of those, "Is the ghost a ghost?19:52Or is it just the repressive
mentality of the time?'19:57And the full movie is just
great atmosphere, great vibes.20:01This same director, Robert Eggers,20:04made a film with Robert Pattinson
and Willem Dafoe called The Lighthouse.20:09It's about two lighthouse keepers,
Willem Dafoe and Robert Pattinson,20:12two lighthouse keepers
trying to maintain their sanity.20:15Basically, there's an island
where they get dropped off,20:17and for six months essentially,
they have to take care of that lighthouse.20:21And on that island,
it's just the two of them.20:23Throughout the movie, you're just
like, 'Is Robert Pattinson going crazy?20:26Is Willem Dafoe manipulating him?'20:28Are they both just going crazy?20:30Is… man, what a movie.
It's in black and white.20:34-Wow.
-That's a great movie,20:36the one in which you
question your own integrity,20:38like it seems like a ghost, but it's not.20:40And like you said,
always at the crime scene.20:42It's an A24 film, if I'm not wrong.20:45Everybody who works at A24,
now I'm convinced,20:47nothing good happened in their childhood.20:50Like, nothing good happened in their…20:52The people who work at
Disney, Pixar, Warner Brothers,20:55a lot of good things
happened in their childhood.20:58-Everyone at A24, all of them…
-Nothing good happened.21:00-There were fights in all their homes.
-Exactly this.21:03And brother, that one about the child…
There's a movie that came out recently21:07in which a child is left
behind at home, alone.21:09There's a girl who is alone in her house.21:11And you just see her
navigating through the household.21:14There's a Japanese film like that.21:16There's
basically, it's based on a Japanese film.21:18Since we're on the subject,21:20Japanese people, Japanese horror,21:23a very big part of the 2000s.
J-horror was a big thing.21:28So there were lots of remakes
of J-horror movies, like The Ring,21:31based on a Japanese film called Ringu.21:33So this is the English version
with Naomi Watts.21:36Great film, great concept.21:38And I want to tell
a personal story over here.21:40-Okay, go ahead.
-In 2002, when this movie came out,21:45my parents used to travel back
and forth a lot between Mumbai and Pune,21:49so I used to be home alone a lot.21:51At that time in my life,
I had just gotten my first DVD player.21:56And back then,
DVDs had a very beautiful thing,21:58they used to have these
extra special features.22:00So, you just go, and there'd be22:02"behind the scenes,"
and there'd be all of that.22:04Ring had a special feature22:06that was just named something like,
"Now See This", without any details.22:10-It's scary just hearing it.
-The second you click play,22:12what the stupid *** DVD did was,22:15it disabled your remote,22:17and it would play the actual videotape.22:19And now your remote's not working,
you can't go back, you can't do anything,22:22and the whole actual videotape…22:24And I should mention, I decided,
for some reason, to watch this movie22:27like all good 17-year-olds,
at 2 o'clock in the morning.22:30Okay? So, now this whole tape plays,
except that's not the terrifying part.22:35If there's some small chance that one day22:37the makers of this DVD
watch this, I just want to say…22:40-what these ******** did.
-*******22:44Is that the whole video plays,22:46and then,22:47for 20 seconds, the screen remains black,22:50after which they put
the phone ringing sound effect,22:54okay? So, you're trying to go back,
back, back, back, back, back,22:58and suddenly there's this… bro,23:01I still remember at 3 in the morning,
I threw my remote.23:05Like, across the room, literally, like,
"Brother, this isn't happening to me".23:08Just cut it.23:09I have put on every light in
the room and gone and sat.23:12And this was the pre-phone era,23:14-so now you can't distract yourself also.
-Exactly, there was nothing.23:18What kind of ****** would they be,
the people who planned this?23:21Yeah, like, brother, this will be fun.23:23People will die,
it will be so much fun. Oh ho-ho.23:26Brother, by the way,
there's another director, Ari Aster.23:30What is this Hereditary…?23:32Hereditary is a very
traumatizing picture, okay?23:34Basically, again,
here the metaphor is just…23:38essentially trauma and mental illness23:40that gets passed down
from generation to generations.23:42Again always at the crime scene.23:44-Always at the crime scene.
-A2423:45Always and this is the
biggest crime scene of them all.23:49-Family dynamics is a horror genre.
-Yes! Hey!23:53Of course,
family dynamics is a horror genre.23:55Have you never
been to a family wedding?23:57Of course,
family dynamics is a horror genre.24:00-100%.
-Then, then, coming back to the scene.24:02So, coming back to the scene,
without giving any spoilers,24:05like, let me put it this way.24:06Sometimes in a movie,
a thing happens where you have no choice…24:09but to just be amazed at the audacity.24:11Like, there are certain rules,
right, that we have in movies, like…24:14-They show this, they don't show that.
-Don't kill the dog.24:16Don't do this, don't do that.24:18This film breaks one of those
cardinal rules, and it breaks it hard.24:23And it does it in a way that takes
no prisoners.24:27And from there on, the movie just
gets more and more and more grim.24:32And in this, I mean,
the cast is just something else.24:35Firstly, there's Toni Collette,24:37who is, I think, one of the greatest
actors of our generation.24:39And there's a scene of hers where
she breaks down on her son.24:59And I think
it's one of the greatest scenes,25:03just in… even in family dramas,25:05if you take anything, I have not
seen a scene that powerful in my life.25:09-Oh my god, what a way…
-Yeah, see there.25:12I agree. Where is Toni Collette's Oscar?25:14Because this is a thing
that happens, again, right?25:16This year,
finally Sinners won a bunch of awards,25:19but before that, brother,
horror gets no respect.25:22And Toni Collette's
performance in this film,25:24is an all-time great performance.25:27But see, again, this one has a wonderful
build with a disappointing climax.25:30Do you agree with this?25:31I liked it, but I can see
why it would disappoint some people,25:34because the film also has this
slightly frustrating thing that happens25:37where it reaches a place where genuinely,25:39there's nowhere left to go in the
story and this is one of those films25:42that they call and I hate the term,25:44elevated horror.25:45Because some people
have to tell themselves that,25:47you know, normal horror is low-class.25:49-You know, this is artistic horror.
-Oh, elevated horror.25:52…so, elevated horror.
You know, you have to say that,25:54"Brother, this isn't a slasher film,"25:56which I disagree with, because I
think slasher films are amazing.26:00I want to see if
slasher films is a subgenre.26:03-Slasher.
-Slasher horror.26:04And I'm so glad this is the image,26:06because that is the film
I wanted to talk about.26:09-Scream.
-Scream.26:10Forget as a horror, this thing.26:12I implore you to watch this movie
just as somebody who loves movies.26:15It is the most meta movie.
It's a slasher film about slasher films.26:19I don't have that much
of a problem with slashers.26:21So, Scream is a slasher film
about slasher films.26:23It begins with the person who you think
is the heroine slash hero of the movie.26:41And eight minutes later, she's dead.26:43So, that was the
starting point and again,26:44one of the all-time great slasher and
horror directors, a guy called Wes Craven.26:47-And I'll recommend one more.
-Go ahead.26:50In this same meta genre,26:52a Japanese picture called
One Cut of the Dead.26:57I will just say this.
When you watch this movie, okay?27:01For the first 30 minutes,
you will abuse me.27:05Abuse me. Abuse me
for the first 45 minutes also.27:08But, brother,
when the climax of that movie comes,27:11it's one of the all-time
great movie climaxes of all time,27:14in my humble opinion.27:15Do you think
that watching horror films with somebody,27:19like with friends27:21or like with a partner? A lot of couples
like to watch horror films together.27:25I think it depends on
who you're watching it with, because…27:27But you can't watch
horror films alone, right?27:29I think either you watch it
completely alone at home27:32so that you're fully terrified,27:34or you watch it in a theater where,
like, 300 of you are terrified at once.27:38My problem with watching
horror films with friends is this.27:41If you sit with a group
to watch a horror film,27:43then you have one friend,27:45who is actually
the biggest coward in the world.27:49So, as a result of that,27:50what happens is that
in the middle of the movie,27:52they keep making jokes every five minutes,27:53just to get rid of their own,
bluntly, "scared ********-ness," okay?27:58So, they'll be like,
"A ghost is about to come."28:05And then when the actual ghost comes,
their face becomes this small. Okay?28:09They get so scared.
Their face is exactly…28:13So, watching with those people sucks.28:16That's why they don't
call me for horror movies.28:18Or you go to the theater and
you watch it. This is my logic28:20with horror movies, 100%.28:22And one genre
that we haven't discussed yet is…28:25-Oh, brother.
-Found footage horror, of course.28:29Correct, you are.
Found footage horror.28:32All these movies,
Paranormal Activity, in which…28:35Correct, and it's original was
The Blair Witch Project.28:38This was the first
found-footage horror film.28:42If you go to trivia, I'm sure28:44-there are lots of details about it.
-Oh bro.28:46Because, in fact,
when this was first released,28:48they literally just released it as28:50if the footage was actually found.28:52-Like, that was their marketing also.
-What?28:54Yes and that was their
top budget to box-office ratio28:57because the film cost
only $60,000 to make.28:59And it's written that,29:01each of the three leads
were required to sign29:03a release granting the production
permission to mess with your head.29:14So, imagine that.
You're just there, you've been sent,29:16and now randomly,
someone just comes and goes…29:20and ***** you up.29:25To promote discord between the actors,29:27the directors deliberately
gave them less food29:30-with each passing day.
-This is called the Bigg Boss method.29:31Bigg Boss method, brother.29:32Yes, this is the Bigg Boss
method of filming, 100%.29:35In the middle of The Blair Witch Project,
one guy says, "I will eat an omelette."29:40Hey! Father!29:43Don't go on my father! Hey!29:47Brother, but I like this genre.
I like it quite a bit.29:50So, I'll give you one which is a classic.29:53I'm going to ask you to look
for a film called 100 Days.29:57-Jackie Shroff, Madhuri Dixit, 100 Days!
-Yes, sir.30:00So, the premise of this movie…
what a crazy movie, brother.30:05Basically, literally, she's psychic,30:07and she keeps getting visions of a murder.30:10And basically,30:11in her apartment or something,
there's literally a skeleton in the wall.30:16I remember it was
a mind-messing psychological thriller.30:20Anything else you want to…30:21Yes, sir. While we are
sticking with Indian, yes.30:24I would like to recommend
a film called Bramayugam.30:27Crazy story, okay?30:29A guy shows up at like this mansion,30:33and immediately discovers
things are not as they should be.30:38And that's all I'll say, because
again, it's one of those films30:41where, the vibes should
just be experienced by you.30:44I wouldn't even mind if this
is one of the films that we watch,30:46because it looks beautiful,30:48the performances are great.
Everything mentioned here is correct.30:51Moody atmosphere, top.30:53Musical score, top. Directorial vision,30:56which I believe
is very important for good horror.30:59I actually think horror
has some of the greatest31:02auteurs and visions of any genre in film.31:06So, this is genuinely31:08a top, top, top film, and I would
highly recommend it to everyone.31:13Brother, let's see.
I realized after talking to him31:16that there is a reason
I don't like horror films31:18and I can't watch them.31:19The story I heard from him today,
I am scared of the stories themselves, brother.31:22You can imagine,
without music, effects, without any ghost,31:26without any screaming,
I am sitting here traumatized.31:30So, I have to slowly
get into this genre.31:35I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I had to.31:37I have been thinking
for the last five minutes.31:40-I'm so sorry.
-Let's go, let's go.31:43-Let's watch it.
-Continue.31:44But this is Dekh Bhais new episode.31:46A very different kind of episode.31:48You guys tell us
what other genre's discussions31:50you want to see from us.31:52And which other movies are
your favorite horror movies,31:54tell us in the comments.31:55And with your friends,31:56keep getting scared,
keep scaring, and have fun.31:58Subscribe to IMDb's YouTube
channel and like the video.32:02Thank you so much for having us.32:04The film we are watching today
is Bramayugam,32:06because why not?
