Transcript of THE GREAT METALS DIVIDE: Why Gold Crashed 20% While Silver Exploded 60%!
Wall Street Truthbombs
0:00Gold just gave back an entire year of0:02mania and silver looked at that crash0:04and said0:05no thanks. By the end of this video,0:08you're going to understand exactly why0:09two metals that are supposed to move0:11together just split in half. What that0:14split's actually telling us about0:16interest rates, central banks, and where0:18smart money is really hiding right now0:21as we speak. Guys, if you walk down 47th0:24Street in Manhattan, that's the diamond0:26district, you're going to pass at least0:28a dozen coin and bullion windows with0:31handwritten signs taped to the glass.0:34For most of this year, those signs were0:36advertising gold. Lately, more of them0:39are actually advertising silver instead.0:42And that shift on one block in Midtown0:45is pointing at something Wall Street is0:47still trying to catch up to. Here's the0:49surface story. You know, we always start0:51there. Gold hit a record high of $5,5890:56and $0.38 an ounce on January 28th of0:59this year. It has been sliding ever1:02since, although it's had some bumps up1:04and down on the way. As of this morning,1:07gold is trading around roughly about1:10$4,467.1:12That's roughly 20% off the record. The1:15mainstream take is pretty simple. The1:17gold trade got too crowded, rates are1:19staying higher for longer, and precious1:21metals are just unwinding across the1:24board the way every overheated trade1:27eventually does. Now, there's a clean1:29way to measure this kind of mismatch.1:32Divide the price of gold by the price of1:34silver and you get what traders call the1:37gold-silver ratio. Basically, how many1:40ounces of silver it takes to buy 1 oz of1:43gold. Today, that ratio sits at 67.4.1:47The long-run average going back to 1971,1:52when I was wearing bell-bottoms, is1:5460.5.1:56So, gold is still expensive relative to1:59silver even after the crash, which tells2:01you the divergence I'm about to walk you2:04through is not some tiny blip. It's a2:07real and measurable gap. Except, that2:11story has a hole in it big enough to2:13drive a delivery truck straight through.2:17Pay attention now.2:19If precious metals were really unwinding2:21across the board, somebody forgot to2:23tell, well, Mr. Silver. All right, guys.2:26Let's dig in further, but before we do,2:28please click like and don't forget to2:30subscribe. It's important to be in the2:32know about this stuff, and this is2:33exactly how you do it. Okay, let's start2:36with this. Silver is trading around 662:38bucks and 21 cents an ounce as of the2:41other day. It's up 60.8%2:44year-over-year,2:46not down 20% like gold. Up 60.8%.2:51If this were a uniform flight out of2:53precious metals, wouldn't you think2:55silver should have fallen right2:57alongside its shinier cousin? And it3:01didn't. And the reason it didn't is the3:03shadow data that nobody is putting on3:06the same screen as the gold chart. Guys,3:08you know I love the shadow data. Silver3:11is in its sixth straight year of a3:13global supply deficit. The Silver3:16Institute's own world silver survey puts3:18the 2026 shortfall at 46.3 million3:22ounces. That's up 15% from last year's3:25gap. Since 2021, the market has drawn3:28down 762 million ounces from above3:31ground inventory just to cover3:33differences. And on the COMEX, the3:36exchange where this metal actually gets3:38delivered, registered inventory has3:41fallen roughly 75%3:43since 2020. That's not a sentiment3:45trade. That is a physical shortage that3:48does not care what the Fed does in3:50September. Now, compare that to why gold3:53actually fell. It's not a supply story3:55at all. It is a rate story. Gold pays3:58you nothing to hold it. When Fed chair4:01Kevin Warsh stood up at Jackson Hole and4:03signaled that more hawkish action might4:05be needed to get inflation back to4:07target, traders repriced the odds of a4:09September rate hike higher. And suddenly4:12bonds and savings accounts look a lot4:14more attractive than a metal that just4:17sits there collecting dust.4:19A stronger dollar on top of that made4:21gold more expensive for every buyer4:23outside the United States. Guys, gold is4:26still traded in US dollars. Sorry,4:29world, that's just how it is. I didn't4:31make the rules, that's how it is. Okay,4:34gold did not crash because the world4:36stopped wanting a hedge, it crashed4:38because the competition for your money4:40simply just got more attractive. Now,4:43here's the part that you should really4:45pay attention to. While retail ETF4:47investors have been rotating out on4:50every rate headline, the world central4:52banks have been doing the exact4:54opposite. China's People's Bank has now4:58extended its gold buying streak past 205:00consecutive months. Doesn't look like5:02they're slowing down. The World Gold5:04Council confirmed central banks bought5:062445:08net metric tons in the first quarter5:11this year alone, more than the prior5:13quarter and more than the five-year5:15quarterly average. Poland also kept5:19adding metric tons through this spring.5:21These are not trades chasing momentum,5:24my friends. These are sovereign5:25institution buying through the dip on a5:28time horizon measured in, guys, decades,5:32not days. There is a second force in the5:35room5:36that today's most coverage is also5:38treating as a footnote. Footnote, okay.5:42Gold is actually rallying yesterday5:44morning up around 1.5% specifically of5:48renewed strikes around Iran and the5:51Strait of Hormuz with traders buying the5:53safe haven bid on hopes that escalation5:55stays contained. That's the old school5:58gold story working exactly the way well,6:01that it's supposed to. But notice what6:04that tells you. Gold needs an actual6:07geopolitical shock to get a bid right6:09now. Silver on the other hand did not6:11need a war headline to be up 60.8%6:15year over year. One metal is reactive.6:18It needs a headline to move. The other6:20has been grinding higher on its own6:22fundamentals the entire time war or no6:25war. Now, zoom out to the World Gold6:29Council's own survey of central bank6:31reserve managers published in June and6:34the intent data backs up the buying6:37data. 45% of the central banks surveyed6:40said they plan plan to add gold reserves6:43this year. 89% expect total gold central6:46bank holdings to keep rising over the6:49next 12 months. Those aren't people6:52chasing a headline my friends. Those are6:54institutions that think gold story is6:57nowhere near finished. January record7:00high or not and this is not the first7:02time retail money has piled into silver7:05chasing a supply story. Remember the7:07silver squeeze push back in 2021?7:11Well, if you don't I'm going to remind7:12you right now. Retail traders tried to7:14force a short squeeze on paper silver7:17and mostly succeeding in pumping7:19premiums on physical coins for a few7:21weeks before prices settled back down to7:24where they started. The difference this7:26time is that the deficit behind this7:28move is real and multi-year rather than7:32a one-week campaign which is exactly why7:35the price had held rather7:37than round tripping the way that episode7:39did back then in 2021. So, you have two7:43metals both called safe havens reacted7:46to two completely different forces. Gold7:49is a rates trade wearing a safe haven7:52costume, while silver is a supply crisis7:55that happens to also get bought as a7:57hedge. Treat them as the same asset and8:00I can tell you you'll miscall both of8:03them. Next time someone tells you gold8:05and silver move together, ask them when8:08they last checked the COMEX vault data.8:10Now, here is what this means for your8:13money going forward. If you've been8:15treating gold as a one-way bet on chaos,8:18this morning's job report and the8:20September Fed's decision are going to8:22keep whipping it around in both8:24directions because its price is now8:26basically a leverage bet on what Whorst8:29does next. That is a tradable setup, but8:32it is not as it's not a sleep at night8:35holding right now, my friends. Silver is8:37a completely different animal. A8:40structural six-year deficit doesn't8:42unwind because the Fed hikes a quarter8:44point. If anything, a hawkish Fed that8:47slows the economy eventually slows mine8:49investment and new supply even further,8:52while industrial demand from solar and8:54electronics and AI infrastructure, you8:56heard of that, keeps pulling from an8:59already drained inventory. That's not a9:01sentiment story that reverses on one9:03FOMC statement. But, don't mistake this9:07for me telling you silver only goes up,9:09please. Industrial fabrication demand is9:12actually projected to soften this year.9:15It's a four-year low by some estimates9:17with rising retail and investment buying9:19picking up the slack instead. That means9:22part of silver strength right now is the9:24same crowd that just got burned and the9:26gold rotating into the metal that has9:28not fallen yet. If that retail bid ever9:32fades before the supply deficit actually9:34tightens the market on its own, well,9:36silver can correct pretty hard, too. So,9:38you got to be careful with that one. The9:40deficit, though, is very real. The price9:43uh still is not immune to crowded trade9:45unwinding. You got to remember that,9:47guys. If you want to track this stuff9:49yourself instead of waiting for someone9:51else to explain it after the fact, watch9:54three things right now. Watch the9:56gold-silver ratio that I told you about.9:58Watch that. A move backward to that 60.510:02long-run average means either silver10:04keeps closing the gap or gold keeps10:07falling faster. Watch the COMEX10:10registered silver inventory. When a10:12physical delivery market gets this thin,10:15even a modest demand surprise can move10:17price a lot more than the paper market10:20expects.10:21Excuse me. And watch real yields, the10:24actual after-inflation return on10:26Treasuries. We talk about that all the10:28time at Wall Street Truth Bombs because10:30that's the true competition gold is10:33losing to right now, as we speak. It's10:36more than the headline or the Fed funds10:38rate itself. The bigger lesson here goes10:41way beyond metals right now.10:43When two assets that are supposed to10:45move together suddenly diverge this10:47hard, that's the market telling you the10:49simple story you've been given is, well,10:52it's changing or it might even be wrong.10:55Gold and silver are not one trade. You10:57got that. They never really were. One is11:00a referendum on what the Fed does next11:02and the other is a referendum on whether11:04the world can actually dig up enough of11:06this stuff to build everything it says11:08it wants to build. Knowing which one11:10you're actually trading is really the11:12difference between a smart position and11:14a, well,11:15a lucky guess. And that Diamond District11:17window switching its sign from gold to11:19silver, well, that was never, ever a11:22coincidence.11:24So, your truth bomb for today is this.11:26Gold fell because of what the Fed might11:28do next month. Silver held because of11:30what the world cannot dig up fast11:32enough. And the moment you start trading11:34them as the same metal is the moment you11:36start, well, losing money on both.11:40Join me every day, my friends, for Wall11:42Street Truth Bombs, where I drop them11:44here and I dig them up before the market11:46figures them out.
