Unlearned Wisdom by Johnny Chang
0:00In today's episode, we're going to be0:01talking about the number one idol that0:03most people don't realize they're0:05actually worshiping. And then we're0:07going to also talk about how a0:09compliment can be just as dangerous as a0:12sin. And towards the end, we're going to0:13be talking about why wanting to stop0:16sinning could potentially be an idol in0:19itself.0:21>> Compliment can be a sin.0:23>> Yeah, compliment handsome man.0:25>> That's a sin. [laughter]0:27Welcome back to another episode on the0:29Unlearned Wisdom podcast with yours0:30truly, Pastor Johnny Chang, where each0:32episode is a gospel center lesson that0:34you could apply to your life today.0:36>> Today. Like, comment, and subscribe and0:39download the audio episode.0:40>> Yo, someone commented on you, Aaron,0:42where he's like, I could hear Aaron0:44going today.0:46>> Yeah, good.0:48>> Today, they think about when they think0:49about today, he's like, today.0:50>> That's the jingle. That's you got to0:52implant it into your mind.0:53>> [laughter]0:53>> the adlibs. He's like, "Mama,0:56>> mama today." Cuz it's like0:58>> it's like an old carpet commercial. I1:00forgot what that one.1:01>> They need to bring jingles back.1:02>> Yeah,1:02>> jingles were the best.1:03>> One of them ended with like today today.1:06>> It's a good one. Anyways, glad you like1:08it. [laughter]1:09>> Yeah,1:10>> Aaron's one contribution.1:14[laughter]1:15>> Someone out there is paying attention.1:16>> Yeah,1:17>> the one Aaron fan. [laughter]1:19>> Yeah,1:20>> I think I have zero. I have enemies. So,1:22I know you have fans.1:24>> No, I have enemies. I always1:25>> People like your big brain questions.1:27>> What do you have to say to your enemies?1:29>> I'll never go away. [laughter]1:32>> What do you have to say to your fans?1:34>> To my fans?1:35>> Yeah.1:35>> Just keep writing nice comments about1:37me. Paragraphs. But that might be a sin1:39and I'm about to find out.1:41>> Yeah. Yeah. No, the reason and the1:43inspiration for this episode was cuz I1:45was kind of thinking back on my life.1:48And man, one of the things that I was1:51worshiping, you know, um on both sides1:54of the cross, meaning before I met Jesus1:57Christ and then after I met him was1:59acknowledgement, praise and worship2:01acknowledgement. It's2:02>> your love language. Yeah, basically2:04words of I thought that's what it was,2:07but man, it was it was so bad because2:10>> like I would obviously before Jesus2:13Christ, I would seek validation from the2:16homies. So, I would want to show them2:18this is how down I am, but deep down it2:21was only to kind of boost my own ego and2:25to show them how gangster I was so that2:27I could feel loved. you guys know like2:30when it's your family and you guys have2:33I don't know a get together for Asians2:35specifically Chinese people when we have2:38gettogethers it's it's really just you2:40you want to see which kid graduated from2:44this Ivy League or who got a new you2:46know I don't know restaurant or real2:49estate whether it's like an apartment2:51complex or whatever there's people that2:53do that they flex right2:55>> and so in the same way [clears throat]2:57as gang members we were like, "Oh, I did3:00this on this week. See, I was super3:02down. And I did this for this homie. And3:04I took that I took that charge. You3:06know, I stashed that that pistol." So, I3:08[snorts] didn't even realize that that3:10was something that I was worshiping. And3:12when people wouldn't sit there and give3:15me my praise or say that I was down or3:17say that I was gangster, I started to3:20feel anger towards them and resentment3:22and frustration. And I started to spin3:24narratives against people, too. Little3:26did I know that that was something that3:28I was again worshiping. And um if they3:32didn't worship me that way or didn't3:34give me, you know, acknowledgement or a3:36pat on the back or a nice compliment or3:38whatever exaltation, then I would3:41literally weaponize it and I would turn3:44just toxic towards people. That's how I3:46got my name, too. They would call me ill3:48like like mentally ill, but also like3:51sick, like cancer. like it spreads to3:54people, right? I I'll pop off on one3:57person and if somebody says something3:59else, I pop off on them, too, because4:01they also were supporting the person4:03that wasn't giving me my flowers. It was4:05so wild. And then I thought, okay, I4:08received salvation. I thought that was4:11pre-cross before I met Jesus that died.4:14But what's crazy is that carried on into4:16my ministry. So, I became a prison4:19minister. And when I went to prison,4:23inmates were starting to kind of stroke4:25my ego. Yeah, bro. We relate to you. We4:27understand, man. You're from Ramona4:29Gardens. Me, too. Bro, you you live4:31through the green light era. Me, too.4:33Just crazy things like this. And I4:35didn't realize that although I had4:38thought that I left my old life behind,4:40that one thing that I carried over was4:42this pride, this silent pride of, man,4:45I'm doing good and like they relate to4:47me. Look at me. I'm getting acknowledged4:50again. And it was just so so crazy,4:53right? And so I also noticed that the4:56same patterns show up in pastors too4:58where where we'll meet pastors and they5:02have these big congregations and they're5:04pumped when it comes to just filling out5:06a room or just having people wait in5:09line. But then later they'll experience5:11burnout because the rooms got smaller or5:14the sermons aren't getting praised as5:16much or people aren't coming to them as5:19much. And that was something that just5:21gave me the inspiration to go, man, I5:23really got to talk about this cuz I5:24don't think anybody is right. Which5:27leads into,5:28you know, God giving [clears throat] me5:30that unlock of going, Johnny,5:33you didn't realize that acknowledgement5:36was your God for the longest time. So, I5:40would do anything to get that5:42acknowledgement, whether it was take a5:44case, you know, beat a charge, carry a5:47strap, carry, you know, drugs, even like5:50hit licks, bus missions, whatever it was5:55to even going to prison and going, I5:57want to be a good minister and I want,5:59yeah, I'll go to places where other6:02pastors won't go. I'll go to Liberia,6:04Africa even if I have to show that I'm a6:07real Christian. And then I took that6:09again gang banging acknowledgement6:11energy to the other side of the cross6:14after I received salvation. So secularly6:17I was searching for you know6:20acknowledgement and praise. And then6:22salvifically after salvation I was still6:24searching for acknowledgement and6:26praise. And that's what broke me. That6:28made me realize dude you you're still6:31your you're still serving like God6:33outwardly but internally you're serving6:36yourself. And that was a huge unlock for6:39me which took me I think like like year6:44five mark and I think five is such a6:45beautiful number because it represents6:47grace. Like after the fifth year was6:49when things started to really change for6:51me and go you you really not doing6:54things well. Even when I went and I and6:56I argued with people at Venice Beach or6:59Santa Monica or these places, it was all7:01literally just for me like now that I7:04think about it. And so, you know, I7:07think that's the number one the number7:09one hidden idol that most people don't7:12recognize that they're worshiping is7:14acknowledgement.7:16Okay. The the [snorts] thing is like I7:20don't think there's a single person in7:22this world, no matter how7:24um humble they are, that doesn't7:27appreciate a compliment or wants to go7:29their whole life not getting any type of7:31acknowledgement.7:32>> That's not what I'm saying. Why you7:33listening?7:34>> Well, you made it your idol,7:36>> right? But so, so,7:38>> so wanting acknowledgement is okay.7:41>> When7:43acknowledgement is the only thing you7:45pursue and you seek and it's the7:47backbone and the motivator of what you7:49do and how you move, which is what I7:51did.7:52>> Who would ever admit that though?7:53>> A lot of people. Me.7:54>> Really?7:55>> Yeah. I think Aaron would7:57>> a sucker for a nice cup.8:00[laughter]8:02>> No, I mean like um No, but like you're8:04just like subject to like your8:05environment. Like8:06>> Sure.8:07>> Back in the day, like when I was DJing,8:09did I start DJing because I love music?8:12Yes.8:12>> Mhm.8:13>> But did I also start DJing cuz I thought8:14it would make me super cool? Yes.8:16>> Yes. Didn't work out, did it? I8:18>> It didn't work out. I'm just kidding.8:19No, I'm just kidding. But like at the8:20time it did work out. It was like it8:22music aside, yes, I loved music and8:24that's why that's the outlet I chose to8:25try to get cool, but it would I would8:28get all the things that I wanted out of8:29it.8:30>> And my my point is that8:32>> isn't that innately in every single8:34human being? And even if they say,8:36>> "No, I don't care about it." So like,8:39>> so yes, wait, sorry, Ra, I didn't pick8:41on you yet. Raise your hand again.8:42>> Yes, sir. In the back.8:44>> Thank you. [laughter]8:44>> The one with the tattoos. Um8:48the that's a good point because which is8:50my next point is it's really hard to8:52catch8:53>> ah8:54>> because it looks good. I'm serving8:57people. I'm loving people. Why shouldn't8:59I be acknowledged for that? But that's9:01how Satan works. When you look at9:02Genesis, it says the the serpent was9:06more subtle. Like subtle is not9:08something that's just huge and like9:10makes all this noise. It's very subtle9:12and it's hard to detect because of how9:16subtle it is. Well, I'm helping people9:18and yeah, I started, you know, preaching9:21the gospel because I love God. But9:23slowly what happens to most people,9:26their heart transitions. You'll notice9:28when pastors, you know, preach a sermon9:30and people don't clap or they'll drop a9:32bar and people are just like, "What?"9:34Like, or they fall asleep during the9:36sermon. I've seen this in ministry where9:38people get frustrated and that's where9:40it's like that silent killer where it9:42shifts you from hey I started with good9:44intentions. I started because like Aaron9:47was saying I love music but later it9:49becomes like you know man I want I only9:52want to be known like if I don't sell at9:54a show let's say or I don't then it9:55means that I'm not a good DJ which is9:58completely off the beaten path because10:00you're you're doing it out of love. It10:02doesn't matter if you're good or not.10:03There's people that I know that10:05literally will play a sport and they're10:07literally horrible, but they keep10:09playing it. And I'm like, why? Because10:10they It's the love of the game, right?10:12>> It's like Aaron Aaron 2.0 playing pickle10:14ball.10:15>> He doesn't have a mic. He's sitting10:17there sething.10:18>> Has to take the hit.10:19>> Yeah.10:19>> Right. So again, wanting to be10:20acknowledged and wanting to be10:22encouraged is not a bad thing. wanting10:25it that encouragement from people more10:27than Jesus and God is a bad thing10:30because then it literally drives the the10:33whole vehicle. It's like I'm going to10:35sit there and I'm now subjecting myself10:38to what another person says about me10:40over what God has already said about me.10:42Right? So this is where it's it's it's10:44bad. So yes, it is innately in us and10:47again not inherently evil. But just like10:51people who have good intentions, not all10:53good intentions are God intentions. A10:55lot of these presidents have good10:56intentions, they probably come into10:58office and they want to do well and then11:00they can't deliver. People, you guys,11:02anyone who's ever been divorced, you11:03guys had started with good intentions.11:05You didn't sit there and go, you know11:06what, we're going to spend tens of11:08thousands of dollars on this wedding,11:10bring two families together, and then in11:12a couple years or a couple months or11:14even in, you know, a decade split up.11:17Everybody's wondering what happened and11:18make like be really embarrassed in front11:20of our family members and just have to11:22tell people and gossip about the other11:24person being evil x y and z. And so it's11:28it's again good intention is not always11:31God intention. And wanting11:33acknowledgement from a person is11:35different than wanting acknowledgement11:36from God who's already acknowledged you11:382,000 years ago on the cross. We just11:41have to be cautious about that because11:43we're talking about idol worship here.11:45We're talking about hidden idols. I'm11:47just trying to bring a spotlight to11:49people to realize that, hey, maybe what11:51I'm doing, is it for God or is it for11:54me? Like outwardly I'm serving God, but11:56inwardly it's for me. And that's not11:59just with God. Atheists and other people12:01can understand you shouldn't do things12:03just for yourself. Like that could be12:05the byproduct and the benefit.12:06Absolutely. But you shouldn't be like,12:09I'm only going to do this for people cuz12:11I it makes me feel good. No, you should12:13do things for other people because it12:15makes them feel good, right? It's12:16different. So, yeah.12:18>> See, this is a huge problem for me.12:20>> Yeah.12:21>> This is genuinely a huge problem for me.12:22>> We brought this episode for you.12:24>> I mean, really, this episode is about I12:25was reading like the first like the12:27first line. I was like, is this one12:28about me? But, um, no, like I I'll I'll12:32be like to that point to a fault where I12:34could literally do something within our12:36business and it could further the12:38kingdom in so many ways. It could even12:39generate us revenue in ways like if I12:42built a for example I built the the new12:44donation page and it's super super cool12:46and that could generate so many12:48donations that helps further the12:49ministry in so many ways but I didn't12:51care about that so much as I called12:52Jeremy and I'm like hey you need to12:53glaze me on this one cuz this is so cool12:55and it's just like if I could do things12:57that could help you guys could help12:58myself even could help the kingdom but13:00but it I like wouldn't even care even if13:03it made us a bunch of money but if13:04Jeremy was like no this is lame I'd be13:06pissed like that wasn't worth my time I13:07shouldn't have done13:09I know his weak spot is kryptonite.13:11[laughter]13:11>> Well, so I'm curious like like your13:14environments. Well, I'm curious more13:16about your environment, too. So, answer13:17the question after this. Your13:19environment was parents didn't13:21acknowledge you. So, here's some people13:22that are like, "Yo, good job. Good job."13:25Right? So, it's like programmed into to13:27a young age, which makes sense. A lot of13:29times also the opposite happens where13:31where Asians are taught not to take on13:35any like you they try to be it's the13:37humble wars.13:38>> How much can I show you how humble I am13:40that I don't accept acknowledgement.13:41Please wait till questions at the end13:43sir.13:44>> I'm just kidding. The guy's podcast.13:46What were you saying? What? Don't hurt13:47me. What [laughter] were you? No,13:49>> I was saying but that in itself is also13:51a form of acknowledgement.13:52>> Look at how humble I am.13:55>> Right. Like like I had a homie who was13:57like that would where he wouldn't take13:58any food or any he was starving one14:01time. You guys remember Hometown Buffet?14:03>> Yeah, [laughter] he he took no food at a14:05buffet.14:06>> He took no food at the buffet.14:08[laughter]14:09>> No, I'm serious.14:10>> Bro is so nonchalant.14:12>> Legit. So we went, they paid for14:14everybody. I'm over here just big14:16bagging it, right? I don't care. I'm14:17like14:19[laughter]14:20>> they That was prime rib night. You don't14:22know.14:22>> He knew the nights, bro. Beat the house.14:25>> Beat the house, bro.14:26>> To drag him out of there.14:27>> Like, call the cops. [laughter]14:30>> And I go there and then bro is like14:32starving. And he's like, "Yeah, but I I14:35can't, man." Like, he had this like14:38mentality that I I have to pay these14:40people back if I do this, which most14:42Asians have that mentality.14:44>> And I was like, I don't care. Like, I14:46have no spine, bro. I'm not going to I'm14:48just going to eat. [snorts]14:49when the father, which I think it was14:51his I forgot if it was his girl or if it14:54was like his cousin's girl that like14:56threw that little party for everybody.14:58We were younger, too. But when the15:02father turned away, he took a piece of15:04my chicken like and he just like put it15:07in his mouth. And I just I was like,15:09"Why don't you just eat? Like, what the15:11heck?" He's like, "Nah, bro. Like, I15:13don't want to look disrespectful." And I15:15was like, "But you're like already15:17disrespecting them." And it actually got15:18to the point where they got mad at him.15:21Like the dad was like some Vietnamese15:23dude. He's like, "Why you no eat, man?15:25Why you no eat?" And then he's like,15:27>> "Oh no, I'm not hungry. I'm not hungry."15:29And he's like, "No, man. I pay for you15:30already." He's like, "Yeah, I I'll have15:32my mom pay you back."15:34>> Oh my god.15:34>> So it was this heart of Yeah. of15:38>> I don't take anything from you guys. And15:40then even years later,15:42>> he'd be like, "Right, Johnny, like I15:44don't ever owe nobody. It was this15:46heart." And so I I was able to see15:48obviously in hindsight because I'm saved15:50now to go, whoa, that was pride. But I15:54didn't back then I was kind of like,15:56you're only dumb for not eating. But I15:58respected it. I was like, dang, bro16:00stands 10 toes. He's trying He He really16:02does listen to his parents. He's trying16:03to be humble. Like cool. Now when I look16:06at it, I don't see it as humility. I see16:08it as pride. It's like if somebody's16:10offering something and they they're16:11giving their hard-earned money and they16:13want everybody to come in and like16:15celebrate with their family and you're16:17over here like I'm too like it's like16:19this energy of I'm too good and look at16:21me I can't you know [snorts] and it16:22wasn't like he was being disrespectful16:24blatantly but in his heart you could see16:27that he was like I'm not going to bend16:29for nothing which was crazy.16:32I'll be in Europe next weekend for three16:35live events that are free in Sweden and16:38Amsterdam. The event is called After16:39Service. There's going to be a sermon16:41from me. You get to ask me questions and16:43we do a meet and greet. My first stop is16:45Stockholm, Sweden, Friday, June 5th at16:475:00 PM. Next, I'm going to Amsterdam16:50Saturday, June 6th at 6 PM. And finally,16:53also in Amsterdam, Sunday, June 7th at 316:56p.m. To RSVP for free, go to the events16:59page linked in the description and enter17:01your email into each event that you want17:03to attend. From there, we'll email you17:05locations and event details. So, I've17:08never thrown an event in Europe, and17:09honestly, I don't know when I'll be17:11back. So, this is your chance. If you're17:13in a nearby country, I highly recommend17:15you guys fly, swim, run, bike, jog, do17:18whatever you got to do cuz I want to see17:20you and I hope you guys want to see me.17:22So, bring your friends, bring your17:23family, and I'll see you guys the first17:24weekend in June. So, if so, like17:27obviously if you make acknowledgement17:29your idol, that's bad.17:31>> Yeah.17:32>> But then where like and you said it's17:34very hidden. It's very hard to see the17:36line when you you've it's become pride17:38in inside of yourself. So, I'm just17:40thinking about like, you know, I17:43remember with my mom, it was like she17:45would give me no flowers ever. It was17:47always like, "It's God. It's God." And17:48sometimes I'm like,17:50>> "Now I'm the one that cleaned the house,17:51okay?" You know, [laughter]17:52something like that. You know what I'm17:53saying?17:54>> So, it's like, and it's not like I was17:56suddenly like prideful or whatever. I'm17:58just like, "Yo, at some point like just18:01>> I did it." You know what I'm saying?18:02Like, you could you could just credit18:03me.18:04>> Yeah.18:05Does that like is that is that bad for18:09somebody to be like, "Yo, okay, I get18:11that I should be humble and I'm not18:12trying to be prideful, but like that was18:15me." You know what I'm saying? Like,18:17>> no. Well, when you look at Matthew 6:1,18:19it kind of answers that question, right?18:21It says, "Take heed that you do not your18:23arms before men to be seen of them,18:26otherwise you have no reward of your18:27father which is in heaven." So this is18:29just for like spiritual life but even18:32when you take it just regularly there is18:35nothing wrong again with wanting18:37encouragement acknowledgement some some18:40of the best like innovations in life18:42some of the best times that we had with18:44our homies at least for me was when we18:47were encouraging each other getting each18:48other out the mud like being there for18:50each other that's not a bad thing but18:53again it's when you're like I need that18:55validation as fuel and that's the center18:58of everything now, like the center of my19:00universe to the point where if that19:02person doesn't acknowledge me, it can19:04literally ruin my whole day, right? This19:07is what we're trying to like stop people19:09from doing because it is an idol idol.19:12And I see it in the churches more than19:15anything. I see it all over the world,19:17but it's crazy that you see it in the19:19church. Like I said, it's a hidden or19:22silent idol where people are literally19:24sitting there and they'll even say a bar19:26and they'll just wait and they won't19:29move on with their sermon. With us, when19:31we say stuff, I won't even let people19:33clap. I realize that pastor would be19:35like, "Bro, you need to let them clap19:37for you." I'm like, "No, because I'm19:39trying to get through the sermon. I19:41don't want to just be like, "Clap. Yeah,19:43yeah, yeah." And even on my one-on-19:44ones, like I'll be I'm not on my Q&As's19:47I'll try to like speak and then people19:49will try to clap and it's just it's19:50always this awkward like and then I'm19:53like yeah so you understand and then19:54sometimes I literally you'll see it in19:56my face. I'm like they're clapping. I'm19:57like19:58>> okay like let them clap and then I'll20:00and then I'll move forward, right? I'll20:01I'll be like okay they're clapping. Let20:02me take a sip of water. For me, it's20:05it's it's cuz I know that my heart was20:07like that and I'm cautious of it to go,20:10dang, if I get praised a little bit too20:12much, this is going to be the Johnny20:14Chang show, not the Jesus Christ show.20:15And so, it's okay to ha to be cautious20:19like that. Do I like acknowledgement and20:21praise? Of course. Do I like being20:23encouraged? Of course. But I cannot20:25allow that to then become God and then20:29take precedence over God. That's just a20:32no. No.20:33>> Yeah. Like why did you care for your mom20:35to give you credit?20:36>> Right?20:36>> Cuz I'm tired of her giving like you20:38know it's everything for me. It was just20:40tired of her always preaching.20:41>> Did you clean your room?20:43>> Yeah.20:43>> Or did you receive grace? [laughter]20:47>> A lot of kids who don't20:49>> Yeah. What is my mom here?20:50>> Get out of here.20:51>> There's a lot of kids who don't clean20:52their room but never come around.20:55>> Hey, listen. Okay.20:55>> You receive grace.20:58>> Yes. [laughter]21:00>> Look at how hard that was.21:01>> That wasn't hard. Yeah. Yes.21:03>> That wasn't hard. That was me learning.21:05I'm such a fast learner. [laughter]21:09>> Hey, um you know, I'd say is the easiest21:13measure cuz I'm sure people are like,21:15"Oh, because you're famous or whatever."21:17I'd say this. The easiest way for21:19someone to see how much they care about21:21an acknowledgement is if they post21:23something and they're checking and21:25refreshing the page to see who's liking21:27>> or they're regularly checking their21:30>> Instagram story. I'm guilty sometimes.21:32Yeah.21:38>> But I would say that like or also21:41>> if I find myself reading the comments21:43and I get upset either way. You know21:45what I'm saying? Or except upset or21:48happy based on the comments and I21:50realize like, oh, I care about this.21:51>> Marker21:52>> for me. I think another good marker is21:53like, can you have fun alone? It's like21:55I had a big problem with like my fun was21:57so attached to having fun with other21:59people or like I wasn't doing something22:00cool unless I brought someone to see it22:02with me or it's like did it even happen22:04if I didn't take a picture of it to show22:06other people. It's like if you can have22:07fun alone and you need nothing in22:09return, you don't have to take pictures,22:10post nothing. I think that's also a good22:12litmus test.22:13>> Yeah.22:13>> Here's a common one, right? Guy likes22:16girl. Girl rejects guy. Painful,22:20>> right? Painful. And guys like, okay.22:22like like22:24>> then then at some point guy figures out22:25how to get girls22:27>> guy get you know now it's like a now22:29it's like a like a trophy almost or it's22:31like a skill because it's hard22:32>> to make people22:34not okay I'm sorry tatted up22:39big man22:39>> I didn't say22:40>> no no I saw run the camera and look at22:42his face22:45laughing because [laughter] I said that22:46I was like bro like it's hard for you to22:49like get girls but it's easy for you to22:50get Guys, I just [laughter] I just had22:53an intrusive like it's not hard for you.22:56Like you you and your boyfriends are22:58amazing. [laughter]22:59I was like23:01>> so I wasn't laughing cuz it was it was23:03completely Don't trust your thoughts.23:04>> Oh my god. [laughter]23:05I No, I stood like that didn't help23:07either. You were just calling23:10>> I don't know which one was worse.23:11>> Yeah. Yeah. I'm like what?23:13>> Jeremy's like it's like hard to get23:14girls. You're over there. It's like23:17[laughter]23:20um but it's like a lot of times there's23:23like a a direct dopamine up or down23:27based on the outcome. So as much as you23:29want to be like and I'm using that as an23:31example because everyone could relate to23:32that. As much as you want to be like I23:34don't care about the acknowledgement23:35there's a23:36>> rejection that happens to you every23:38single time. And of course, people get23:40numb to it the more it happens. But then23:43it's like,23:44>> that's what it takes. Just like,23:46>> but that's that's good. That's again an23:48indicator. It's like a check engine23:49light, right? People get mad when the23:50check engine light comes on. But imagine23:52if your car didn't have it. You wouldn't23:54know when something's overheating or23:56when something's broken. So, I think God23:59allows that to happen to humble us24:01because if not, then we would24:03transactionalize everybody and every24:05single thing,24:06>> right? It's like when you get mad, guys,24:09if you do get mad and you're listening,24:10that's okay. That's an indicator. Oh,24:13maybe I got to kind of calm down a24:15little bit in terms of seeking24:16validation for other people. If you seek24:19validation from people in one in some24:22way, shape, or form, they're always24:23going to have some kind of control over24:24you. That's just what it is at the end24:26of the day, right? So, if that woman who24:29you're like going after, you want24:30validation from, if she says no to you,24:34she has literally probably just ruined24:36your day. Like, h how can you, you got24:38to be smarter than that. And think about24:40it. How can I let somebody else ruin my24:42day when God has given me this day out24:44of mercy, out of grace to then grow and24:46do all those things? Easier said than24:48done, I would say. But at the very24:50least, God wants acknowledging that. So,24:53we want to be acknowledged by people.24:55God wants us to acknowledge that, hey,24:57there's indicators here where24:58potentially, bro, you're airing on the25:00side and of idol worship and or not even25:03that, but just allowing other people,25:05even on the smallest level, to dictate25:07your emotions, your feelings, your day25:09essentially. And so, it's okay to feel25:11like that. That's why people feel like25:13that. There's never this level of like,25:15I'm not going to get affected by it at25:17all unless you receive grace, unless you25:19see so much of the indicators where it's25:21like a diagnosis. Hey, there's something25:23wrong. There's something wrong. and then25:24it gets fixed. Then you're like, "Okay,25:26I'm getting better." But you still need25:27that indicator for you to see, oh, maybe25:31I do care about validation a little bit25:33too much. I should care about it. It25:35should mess with me a little, but I25:36should be able to move forward. If it's25:38not and I'm spiraling now and I'm25:40plotting and I'm trying to get revenge25:41and I'm doing this now, you're like,25:43"Okay, that's a little bit too much."25:44And again, indicator.25:46>> So, what was the I guess I'm curious in25:48the gang? Obviously, it's like the older25:50gang members acknowledging you.25:52>> Yeah. Um, and then what did that grow25:54into?25:55>> Uh, it it grew into now you because25:58older members acknowledging you, it's26:00like a hierarchy system. Now you you26:02become OG. You become a leader kind of26:05in your own right. You become26:07acknowledged by enemies, which the26:10number one thing I think why most people26:13are so crazy in the streets is because26:15they're not just seeking validation from26:17their homies anymore. There's a level26:19that a lot of people and most of you26:20guys could know this if you're being26:22honest and you you you live that life.26:25You actually want your enemies to26:27acknowledge you. As crazy as it is, you26:30want to be able to have your name ring26:31bells when you walk through. Oh yeah, I26:33know that food. Damn, that food's crazy.26:35Like if your enemies can say that, then26:38you you achieve this kind of like26:40all-time high of like, dang, even my own26:43enemies, they respect me and they fear26:46me. And that's just how it is at the end26:48of the day, right? That's why gang26:49members don't really attack women and26:52children because you don't get points26:54for that. But if you're over here and26:56you're like, you take somebody's life26:57and they're they they were like a known27:00dude. Now you just got all of the juice.27:02You just got all of the street cred. And27:04you're like, "Yeah, I was that dude who27:06did that. Dang, he was super scary and27:08you did that to him. Dang, this bro's27:10gangster." This type of mindset is what27:12we chase after. So there are hierarchies27:14of like and there's also different27:17things. There's gang members and gang27:18bangers, right? Gang members are the27:20people who hang around and they're just27:22like flashing and throwing up gang signs27:24and all this other stuff and then27:26there's gang bangers who are doing all27:28the work. Usually a hood is only as27:31strong as their gang banger. So when you27:34go to prison, it's usually the gang27:36bangers that are in there. They either27:37committed a crime, they killed somebody,27:40they did whatever, and then people are27:41all riding off of that cotel where it's27:44like, "Oh, that's that dude. He's from27:45that hood. Oh, he's crazy." Cuz it's27:47usually just a couple shooters who are27:49literally doing 90% of the work of the27:52hood. And that's just the truth. That's27:54just the truth. And so, um, it's it's27:57that's what you're looking for in terms27:59of validation, right? For us, we did a28:01lot of stuff in silence because we28:04didn't want to boast about it. It was28:05similar. It was like a hybrid of the28:07Asian culture. Like you don't talk about28:10what you do, you do it and you let the28:12results speak for itself, right? And you28:15do that hit, you stay quiet. It's almost28:17mafioso status. And so that's why it was28:19so difficult to kind of catch members in28:22my neighborhood because we weren't28:23boasting about anything. We would do it28:26and then just walk around and we're so28:28incognito, you know. Um, my generation28:30kind of messed it up because we got28:31tatted, but back then everybody was just28:33quiet, did their own thing. You wouldn't28:36even be able to tell. And so,28:38[clears throat] you know, that's what28:39you're looking for is like I don't want28:41the the status. I want to be infamous,28:43but I also want people to know like who28:46I am. And I don't I just look like a28:48average Joe, you know? And I and and and28:51people look at you and go, "Yo, that28:53dude, oh, that dude's crazy." Like, what28:55him? Like, we like this type of energy.28:57Some hoods are different though. Some28:59people are like, "Nah, I'm we're the29:01craziest ones." Like, you know, I got29:04seven bodies, eight bodies. Like, whoa,29:05that dude. And they even like they want29:07the cops to know it. Which some kids29:09nowadays are crazy, too. Like, yeah, I29:11did that. And the cops are looking for29:12you. And it's like this cat and mouse.29:14They get an adrenaline rush out of that.29:16I remember when I was younger and I was29:19active. I would, it would just be like a29:22high for me. I realized it was just like29:26how much crazy stuff can I do right now29:29before I either die or get caught. And29:31when you have that type of mentality,29:34[snorts] it's it's just the craziest29:36thing. Like you but but when you get29:38through it, you literally go home and I29:41would feel like I remember I would feel29:44like, dang, I'm untouchable. Look, I did29:46all this and I made it home and I'm over29:49here like taking a shower when I should29:51be locked up right now. And that feels29:53so empowering. It it really is an29:56addiction. Like I was an adrenaline29:58junkie. But that is what makes people30:01crazy, right? And that's how how deep30:04into acknowledgement and praise that I30:06wanted that I was like, I'm going to30:08just do this type of stuff. So naturally30:11people start to know you because you do30:13things more than what other people are30:14going to do and it's just how it is, you30:16know.30:17>> [snorts]30:18>> Then when you were in the church, what30:20was the first moment where you fully30:22realized, "Oh, I really care about what30:24people say."30:25>> Um, I think when pastor said one thing,30:28which was like, "Hey." Cuz I was30:31dressing in a suit and he's like, "Hey,30:33you look handsome. Just that one thing."30:36I was like, "Don't mind if I do." Right?30:39And I'm just like, it it was very30:42I tried not to get high-hearted, but I30:44felt it. It inflated me. He's like, "I'm30:47the so sexy."30:48>> Yeah, I'm like, "So sexy, honey woman?"30:51I start singing, right? [laughter] But30:53>> he seems skipping in the hallway.30:55Everyone's like, "What the?"30:56>> But that's the time when pastor drank30:58the tea and was like, "You bad man." I31:01was like, "What the hell? You just31:02called me handsome, man. Now you call me31:03bad." Like I was so mad. And that's when31:07I I acknowledged that like, "Oh." But31:09then when I tried to change it, the it31:12it was just years and years of this31:14thing being hardwired into me of like31:17you got to live and you got to be the31:19best at what you do. You got to be31:21exalted. You got to be respected and you31:24got to be acknowledged and you got to be31:26validated. And if you're not,31:29you have to do everything to be31:32validated. Even when it came to31:33fighting, man, I remember I can't I31:36couldn't even take people calling me the31:38b- word or saying anything about me. I31:41would literally lay in bed and I would31:44be shaking like I got to get him. Like I31:47would be so mad because somebody said31:50that fool ain't down. They didn't even31:51call me the beer. They'll be like he31:53ain't really what he is. And I would be31:55sitting there like, man, and I'm31:56plotting like when I see this, I'm going31:58to get him. I'm for sure I'm going to31:59make him realize what he said because32:01deep down what it was was he didn't32:03acknowledge me. And so that was like32:06psychopathic straight up. But at the32:08same time, it that's what that's how32:11much I struggled with acknowledgement32:13was they don't acknowledge me. They32:14don't acknowledge me. They don't32:15acknowledge me. And so it's it's very32:17hard to shed. So I understand, but at32:20the same time, it it's what made me32:22miserable. Right. And Pastor Kim would32:26what I respect about Pastor Kim, man, is32:28he's just as crazy as I am. He would32:31press into those things. Oh, you you32:34like you think you're so good now? You32:36think you preach the gospel so well? I'm32:37like, [snorts]32:39like I'm trying not to, but like there32:40is a heart that feels like that. And he32:42would tell me about DL Moody and how32:44these people who were highlevel people32:47would get exalted. And I'm very thankful32:50because he kind of just kind of like32:53like a like a sword, you know? He was32:55just kind of like putting me in the fire32:57and then hammering me down. And the more32:59he was doing that, I was becoming33:01sharper and sharper and sharper and33:03sharper. And now it's not really I'm not33:05really big on that. There's times where33:06I would slip up if I'm being honest33:08where I like I like the exaltation, but33:10I'm quick enough to like catch that33:11again and go, "Yo, remember what you did33:14for this?" like probably not the33:16smartest thing to do. If people don't33:18acknowledge you, just leave it at that.33:19Acknowledge that you're nothing. Nobody33:22told you that faith would come with this33:23many unanswered questions. You pray, you33:25read, you fast, you tithe, and yet33:28you're still not growing. But there are33:30things that you're still carrying that33:31you haven't said out loud to anybody.33:33Not because the answer doesn't exist,33:34but because you don't know who to ask.33:36That's exactly why every Tuesday I do a33:39group mentorship session. You bring your33:41questions and whatever you've been33:42sitting on. Whether it's a decision you33:44can't make, past trauma you're still33:46working through, or a relationship33:47that's draining you, and I answer them33:49scripturally, foundationally, with33:51biblical truths that meet you exactly33:53where you are. Even if you're not ready33:55to ask a question yet, come and listen33:58in. Because chances are somebody else in34:00that room is carrying the same weight34:02you are. It doesn't matter if you're new34:03in faith or you've been walking with God34:05for many years. No question is too34:07small, too messy, or even too34:09complicated. The group mentorship is an34:11exclusive benefit for gold members only.34:13To join, download Coreheart daily or use34:16the link in the description. I'll see34:18you guys Tuesday. So, I really like35:52that. I'm like, "Dang." And and I think35:53that still has the deep rooted trauma of35:56like my dad never saying, you know, good35:58job, right? So when I [snorts] look at36:01pastor and he said like recently he36:04said, you know, uh you're like the Paul36:06of this generation and oh my gosh, my36:09heart was like right and I was like but36:12then pastor immediately after was like36:14I'm not saying you because you're good.36:17I'm saying like Jesus wants to use a36:19piece of garbage vessel like you36:21>> and then turn you in. I was like, "Oh."36:23And it was like like literally just lost36:26all the the36:27>> He was about to change his name to Paul36:29Chang.36:29>> Yeah.36:31>> Literally. But I was like, "Oh, wow."36:33But then I kind of took a step back and36:36and pastor was like, "You understand,36:37right, Johnny?" And I said, "Yeah." He's36:39like, "You know, back then if I would36:41never be able to say this to you." I was36:42like, "Facts, though." And and still36:45till this day what I respect about36:47pastors that he never acknowledges me.36:49Like even when he talks about me, very36:51rarely does he say Johnny. He'll be like36:53a brother on the internet who's famous.36:54Like he'll do these things because he36:57knows that all of us want to be36:59acknowledged. I see that in the Discord37:01all the time. Like people just want to37:03be acknowledged. I see brothers who and37:05sisters who lived in the church and37:06they'll come to me and they're just like37:08pouring their heart out and and their37:11heart is like I want to be perfect. I37:13listen and I'm just looking at them and37:14I'm like, you don't listen, you know,37:17and I'm not trying to be disrespectful,37:18but you don't you want to be37:20acknowledged. And now I understand why37:23Pastor Kim never really like exalted me37:25like that, you know, and and that's what37:28I do nowadays, too, is I I go to people37:30and I go, "Oh, great. Amazing. Yeah,37:32bro. I got this unlock. I did this. I37:35did that." You know, and I'm just like,37:36"Yeah, amen. Yeah, God gave you the37:38grace to do that. Yeah, yeah, I know.37:40God did this." this and they just keep37:41going and I realized that it's just very37:44difficult for people like you had said37:47Jeremy where it's hard to figure out37:50like how can you see it and and what's37:52wrong with it? What's wrong with having37:55my you know my my my ego kind of boosted37:58a little bit, right? That's what's going37:59to keep me good and motivate me and it's38:02not good.38:04>> Okay, so why can compliments be a sin?38:07>> Because38:08>> that sounds crazy.38:09>> I know. I know. because they because sin38:11does the same thing that compliments can38:13do and vice versa. What I mean by that38:16is they both can turn you away from God.38:18So if you receive enough compliments,38:22you will be doing things just for the38:24compliments.38:25>> This is why I knew this. This is why I38:27bully everybody and make fun of38:29everybody all the time. I knew there was38:32a reason why I did it. That's why I keep38:34you humble. I keep you humble.38:35>> I I I'll tell you why though, honestly.38:38sin. Why compliments can be more38:41dangerous than sin? Sin, at least when38:44you do it, it feels good momentarily,38:46but it pulls you back to shame. Like38:48everybody who's sinning, they know when38:49someone's doing something evil, it may38:51feel good, but later there is a time38:53where you have to be real with yourself38:54and reflect.38:56Compliments don't do that.38:58>> Compliments push you into pride.39:01>> Like what? Everyone's telling me I'm39:04good. You don't feel the sin. You don't39:06feel your heart getting lifted. You see39:08pastors, you see your congregation, you39:10see people literally sitting there39:11going, "Bro, good job." You can't sense39:14it. It's silent, right? That's why I39:16said hidden idols. So, at least with39:19sin, I'm like, "Okay, I know if I'm, you39:22know, sleeping around with 20 other39:24women, like sooner or later, I know God39:26is going to be like, "Okay, enough."39:28Compliments is like that's God showing39:32that person and talking like through him39:34to me. Now it's so it gets convoluted39:37and then it's it gets masked and it's39:39very very very difficult. And so what I39:42love about Jesus is that he didn't39:44compliment people. Like very rarely does39:47he do it, right? Only a couple times39:49does he go what great thy faith like how39:52great is thy faith. Other than that, if39:55you look at him, he's like straight up39:57chastising people. You brutal vipers,39:59you hypocrites. Right? He calls Peter40:01Satan. Like what the like of all people40:04like you you guys want to learn how to40:06cuss at people read the Bible snake40:09Satan you dog right it's like what the40:11heck bro that's crazy but at the same40:14time he's he was doing that because he40:17understood heart posture that people40:20love to have their ego stroked and ego40:22is not your amigo as we say right it40:25literally brings you it's what drags40:28Satan to hell so why do you think Satan40:31wouldn't use that tool to drag you to40:33hell, right? It's just it's just the way40:35it works. And again, very subtle because40:38it's a compliment. Who doesn't like40:40being, you know, having compliments?40:42Like even the people who say they don't,40:45deep down, there's like this feeling of40:47like, wow, like he said something about40:49me and it feels great. You kind of sulk40:51in it. You indulge in it and it's it's40:54very very scary. You know, compliments40:57are very very like they feed your ego41:01silently. They're hard to detect, but41:04also what you feed off of is very41:07important. So, we know Jesus Christ, his41:10blood, his humility, his body, that's41:13what we feed off of. But then later,41:15what happens is even in ministry, what41:17I've noticed with pastors is [snorts]41:19they'll start preaching about Jesus and41:22start feeding off of, you know, the the41:24blood and the and the flesh and the41:26gospel, but later as they're getting41:29compliments, now they're only feeding41:31off of compliments. So, they'll shift41:33from the gospel to things that are very41:36big to things that are like more41:39worldly. And you'll see this in multiple41:42ministries where I'll see a a pastor,41:45even one of these evangelists in the41:47beginning, 40, 50 years ago, when41:49they're preaching, it's all gospel.41:51Jesus is, Jesus is. Now it's like, make41:54money. Jesus wants you to make money.41:56And everyone's like, yeah. And then41:58they're like, ah, like they're now42:00fishing for compliments. They're eating42:02and they're feeding off of the42:03compliments. And it's it's literally the42:06way your flesh is. It has an appetite.42:08Your heart has an appetite. It needs to42:11eat and consume compliments and things42:13like that. And that's why I say starve42:17the flesh, feed the spirit, right? And42:20how you do that is to go, yes, I can42:22like compliments, but compliments cannot42:24be the main source or fuel as to why I'm42:27doing this. Jesus has to be. And this is42:29as cliche and as simple as it sounds.42:32People say that, but they don't believe42:34in that. They go, "Yeah, Jesus." And42:36then they still move the way that they42:38move, right? And one thing that I I42:41really emphasize about compliments, the42:43scary thing about compliments too is42:45that a person can compliment you today42:49and tomorrow they could be criticizing42:51you. That's like how quick I'm seeing42:53the shift as well cuz you your comp42:56those compliments are also kind of42:57loaded because they're only42:59complimenting you based off of what they43:01see, think, and feel. But what they see43:04can change. What they feel can change.43:06And I've seen it happen where people43:08will compliment me and then I'll do43:10something, I'll put out a video and43:12they're like, "Oh, I don't agree." And43:13then boom, they flip and now they're43:15criticizing you with the same amount of43:17energy that they loved you is the same43:19amount of energy that they're hating43:20you. And so that's why it's also43:23important not to stay focused on43:25compliments as well.43:27>> The other thing you were saying kind of43:28reminded me, and I feel this way too,43:30especially cuz I just see like random43:32clips. A lot of pastors feel like motiv43:35motivational speakers than pastors.43:38>> And it's a blurry line. Like you could43:40be listening to the audio blindfolded43:42and you wouldn't know is this a pastor43:44or a motivational speaker?43:45>> If they remove Jesus or like church43:47words and buzzwords, they would43:49literally be motivational speakers.43:50>> What do you think is harder to fight?43:52Shame or pride?43:56>> Pride.43:57>> And before you explain, let's see this43:59guy. Let's see what he thinks. What's44:01harder to fight for me? Shame. I I I'm44:05excited for your answer. For me44:07personally, I think shame.44:08>> Yeah.44:09>> Personally, I think Johnny's answer44:11might be44:11>> I'm trying to think.44:12>> Is that your personal answer? You're44:13saying like in general?44:14>> No. Personal answer.44:15>> Okay. But then you explain yours before44:17he gives an explain you you get swayed.44:20>> Um, you know, my pride doesn't bother me44:22too much. [laughter]44:26>> The shame, however, that keeps me up at44:28night. [laughter]44:29>> Yeah. Yeah.44:30>> I don't know. I just have like bad44:31social anxiety. Like I'll just do44:33something and I'll just hate myself for44:34it for weeks and no one else will44:35>> It's weird to follow girls home and and44:38that [laughter] might like just leave44:39me. Bro,44:40>> listen. [snorts] I'm chill with that44:42part. No, but like I'll do something44:43that no one else will even notice or44:45remember and I'll be the only one44:46thinking about it months later and I'll44:48be like, "Oh, did this or that? Did they44:49think that?" And so my friend was like,44:50"No one gives a crap, dude.44:52>> I'm paying attention."44:54>> Yeah. But my own shame um is much weighs44:57much harder on me than my own pride.44:59Right. I mean, my own45:01[laughter]45:03>> don't bother me.45:04>> Yeah.45:04>> Huh. Interesting. I would say I would45:07say I agree with him after he explained45:08that. I don't really think about45:11pride as like am I pride? Maybe unless45:14people are like45:14>> that's why it's more difficult to fight.45:17>> Huh.45:18>> You don't fight it. You're literally It45:20just engulfs you and then you're like,45:21"Oh my gosh, I'm prideful." When it's45:23already too late. Shame, you feel it45:24right away.45:25>> That's true. And then secondly, pride45:28can mask as shame too,45:29>> right?45:30>> I was about to say, I'll do something45:32prideful and then I'll feel shame about45:33it later.45:34>> What do you mean?45:35>> Pride can like sitting there and going45:38like for Aaron's example where he's45:40sitting there and he's going, man,45:42>> I did something that nobody even45:44recognized and I'm the one tripping45:46about it. But that can be rooted in45:48pride because he has this idea of45:50himself of how he looks.45:52>> Oh,45:52>> and because of that, it's now causing45:54shame. And then that's the surface45:56level. But deeper than that is pride.45:58>> Interesting.45:59>> Makes sense, man.46:00>> So this is why pride is so dangerous46:03because it's it's like you don't fight46:05it. Pride is like bofilm. Shout out Dr.46:08Wakeley. It's like bofilm and you got to46:10have the glutathione. No, I'm just46:12kidding. [laughter]46:13But basically there's a there's a wall46:15and a fence and what bas what Dr.46:20Wickley was saying was you don't know46:22what's behind the fence cuz it's like46:24hidden. and all you see is this huge46:25fence. But we got to break down the46:27fence. Well, in this predicament, shame46:30would be the fence. But deep down46:32underneath it and behind it, the real46:33enemy is the pride, right? So why would46:35you feel prideful if you just46:37acknowledge, yeah, I'm just this type of46:39person. I do weird stuff like follow46:40people home. No, I'm just kidding,46:42right? I [laughter] I do weird things46:45where I notice little things and people46:47don't notice those things. And why do I46:50want if they didn't notice, why is it46:52affecting me? because I have this image46:54that I have to uphold pride and I have46:57to and I want to be a good person and I47:00want acknowledgement pride right and so47:03much so that it's affect me wanting to47:05be acknowledged is okay but now it's47:06making me think it's making me ruminate47:08it's making me doing all these things47:11and so yeah that's why pride is so47:13dangerous it's subtle people think pride47:15is like look at me I'm amazing but even47:17to those people who are like I'm amazing47:19they don't sense it they think they're47:22just spitting facts They think that is47:24confidence. So again, that confidence47:26can also be prideful too, right? So47:28pride is so good at hiding behind47:32certain things. That just makes sense.47:34There's spiritual pride too. Like I said47:35with pastors, well, how how am I47:38prideful if I'm getting blessed by this47:40huge congregation of 10,000 people? Like47:42it's very difficult. Well, you will know47:44them by their fruits and they'll do47:45this. So it's very simple to hide behind47:48pride47:49>> versus shame is it's the sting is right47:52there. It's like, oh snap. Like, okay, I47:54did this and I didn't do and and I and I47:56felt shameful cuz I messed up. But even47:58that, again, can still be rooted in48:00pride. I I would go as far as to say48:03that most shame, not all, but most cases48:05of shame that I've seen is really just48:09them not meeting their own expectations48:10out of pride or their prideful48:12expectations, which then the the48:14byproduct is shame.48:15>> Well said. So, if you guys want to go48:17deeper with the Bible unlocks and just48:19having these biblical resources, guys,48:21we created an app called Core of the48:23Heart Daily. It's48:52on the app store called Horheart Daily.48:54Link is in the description. Back to the48:56episode. I also think that there's a48:58level where it's like you're secretly49:01you're secretly engulfed by pride which49:03leads you to do something that brings49:05the shame and then you49:07>> like for example I I was only thinking49:10about the pastor example like Carl Lent49:12or whatever it is. probably there was49:14some point where he's like I'm that guy49:16which led him to be like I might cheat49:18and do things you know that I shouldn't49:20do which was then led him to shame49:23>> but I don't know I don't I don't know49:25him so but I don't know if there was49:27ever a moment where he's like oh it was49:28the pride that led to eventually the49:31shame49:31>> maybe49:32>> yeah but it's very interesting how it's49:34like completely hidden49:36>> well that's also why I say that sinning49:39like wanting to stop sinning can also be49:42a form of pride49:43Because now you're sitting there going,49:45look, I can stop sinning49:47>> and I'm better than other people. And49:49now I'm validated and acknowledged in49:51front of God. Hey, what's And that's one49:53of those things that's so difficult.49:54Hey, look, I stopped sinning. I'm no49:57longer in my addiction. So look at me.50:00Like, why aren't you guys doing it? I've50:02noticed so many people who've overcome50:03addictions and they're hella judging50:05other people for being an addiction.50:08Come on, bro. I'm not like that. Like,50:09why are you doing that? I'm this. I'm50:11that. Hey, like with like women who have50:14become, you know, went from OF to like50:16this now preaching legalism, like50:19legalism is an idol because you're what50:22legalism does is it replaced Jesus's50:24throne and puts you on the throne. It50:26shoves him off of the throne and goes,50:27"Look at you by your works, your50:29obedience, your love, and your following50:32and your behavior modification. You're50:34like up here now. Hey guys, look at be50:36like me." I straight up hear pastors50:38like, "I don't know why y'all do that. I50:40don't do that." And I'm just like, yeah,50:42but if you stand in front of God, Romans50:443:23 literally says, "For all have50:46sinned and come short of the glory of50:47God." Romans 3:10 says that there's none50:51righteous, know not one. But now they're50:54so good and they keep the commandments50:57so well, similar to Pharisees, that they50:59themselves as sinners cannot see51:01themselves sinning and they only see51:03other people's sins. And that's why God51:05uses analogies like that in Matthew51:07where he's like, "Remove the plank out51:09of your eye before you judge the speck51:11and the dust in somebody else's eye." He51:13says these things because a prideful51:16person, again, pride is straight up from51:18the enemy. It's from Satan. Satan fell51:20from heaven because of pride. Because51:22And his sin, his first sin was pride.51:26Was to sit there and go, "Yo, I'm doing51:28good. Look at me. I'm I'm wise. I'm51:30beautiful. Everybody loves me. Why don't51:32I deserve the throne?" Like that's51:34bananas to sit there and go to the51:36creator and go, "Yeah, I'm creation, but51:38I need I want your position." You have51:41to have a tremendous amount of pride to51:43sit there and go, "Man, move, bro. I51:45know this is your house, but move." Like51:47that. That would be crazy. But he did51:49that with such pride and confidence that51:52God was like, "I'm not even going to51:53talk to you." And just casting them out.51:55In the same way, he's planting that51:56heart into everybody. So, it's it's, you51:59know, wanting to stop sinning is not a52:01bad thing, right? You should hate your52:04sin. But you have to realize you can52:06never be the savior who stopped you.52:08Right? Jesus stopped you from sinning.52:11Without his blood, it is impossible for52:13us to stop sinning. Even with his blood,52:16we continue to sin and do these actions52:18and byproducts of sin. But people then52:22start to be like, I'm a sinner, yes, but52:25I don't sin as much as other people. So52:27therefore, I'm better than the people52:28who blatantly sin. And it's this idea52:31and this energy of and prideful energy52:34and wicked energy of I'm a sinner52:37judging other people for sinning52:39differently. And this is when things get52:42super wicked and just confusing and this52:45holier than thou energy kind of bleeds52:47out of it all. Right? So for a lot of52:49people52:51Jesus is not their savior. Sin52:53management is their savior. Especially52:55the people who sit there and they go you52:57could lose your salvation. Right? And53:00[snorts] when you ask them, "How can you53:01lose your salvation?" They never tie it53:03into Jesus. They go, "If you backslide,53:06if you continue to sin willfully, if I53:08turn away from God if I continue to be53:11disobedient, if I don't get over my lust53:14or my addiction, if I They don't put53:16Jesus at the center." So that means53:17Jesus is not their savior. The sin53:20management, the sin behavioral uh53:22management is what saves them. Okay,53:25today I did good. I'm saved. But53:27yesterday I backslid so I'm not saved53:29again. And they fall in between this two53:32lukewarmness where I'm good. Okay, I'm53:34good. I'm bad. I'm bad. I'm good. I'm53:35bad. I'm good. I'm bad. And they keep53:36doing this. And so it's very dangerous.53:38And that's why, you know, sin and53:41wanting to stop sinning can actually53:44become an idol because the root of that53:46is pride, legalism, and you trying to be53:49your own savior instead of believing and53:52trusting in the one true savior. So what53:54do I do? Right now I'm in this line of53:56like okay I'm trying to okay I hate my53:58sin but I don't want to hate it so much54:00where I become legalistic and then also54:02I want to be careful that I don't become54:05prideful you you know what I'm saying54:06>> you have to understand what sin is sin54:08is an identity not an action54:10>> not action54:11>> and that's why you have to join the54:13streamathon because we literally the54:15first day we talked about sin as an54:17identity and sin is an unbelief so54:19Romans 5:12 Romans I'm sorry John 16:954:23and then you have to start to believe.54:25So again, I'm Chinese. Didn't choose to54:27be that way. Born that way. If I eat54:30more orange chicken or less orange54:32chicken, it does not make me more or54:34less Chinese. I could literally be like54:36Jeremy, eat no orange chicken, and still54:39be hat. No, I'm just kidding. But54:41basically,54:43I don't have to [laughter]54:49>> guys. You know, you know Jesus Jesus54:51didn't chase after Judas. No, I'm just54:53kidding. [laughter]54:55But yeah, no, so basically54:57>> compar comparing yourself to Jesus is54:59>> true, true, true facts though. Figgity55:01facts. I repent. But55:03>> the pride in you.55:04>> Yeah. Yeah. [laughter] The pride. But55:06genuinely, if you guys, you know, a true55:10sinner knows that they could never save55:13themselves from sin. They lean on the55:15one who already has. And so, you just55:17have to recognize that, oh, I'm trying55:19to. I may sin a little less, but even if55:22I have a little bit of sin, 1% of sin,55:24and I meet God in front of that, he has55:26to take me out, take me out. In55:28Leviticus, it talks about this, a goat55:30or a lamb without blemish, perfect,55:33spotless. Jesus was that person. Cuz if55:36you could just do good and try your best55:39and God knows your heart, he then55:41wouldn't have to brutally55:44sacrifice his son for the world. He55:46would just be like, "No, they're doing55:47okay." Uh, it's like, you know, it's55:49like A, B, and C's, right? As long as55:51they're they're getting a C, they're55:52passing. Like, that's not how God works,55:54though. It's all or nothing with God.55:56It's black or white with God truly. And55:58so, either you're a sinner or you're56:00saved. You're either a sinner or you're56:02a saint. That's it. And that's what56:04saves you. The blood is what transfers56:06the saint and the sunship to you. The56:09the sin is going to keep you and works56:12is going to keep you in bondage. Jesus56:14frees. Sin bounds you. And that's just56:17how it is.56:18>> Yeah. Yeah. So, so I mean, Aaron, what56:20have you learned from this?56:22>> That you're a prideful son of a56:24>> To seek validation.56:27>> Um, to let it let it consume my thoughts56:29more than everything else.56:32I'm just kidding. To do the opposite of56:33those things essentially.56:35>> Yeah.56:36>> Um, which will be tough.56:39>> It's still like it plagues you. Your56:42thoughts just plague you?56:43>> No. No. It just I mean, yeah. [laughter]56:47sometimes. But56:49>> how's it happen? You just be sitting56:51there and then some thought will come in56:52and then you just56:53>> pretty much56:54>> spiraling.56:55>> Yeah,56:56>> pretty much. Really, the biggest56:57horrible thing is Instagram. If anyone's57:00feeling like they're in a mental mental57:01health crisis, yes, dig into your word,57:03but also just get off Instagram,57:05>> dude. Like, I'll just be on Instagram57:07and it'll take maybe 10 or 15 scrolls57:09until something triggers me. Whether57:10it's family life, friends,57:12relationships, work, something will57:15ruminate on something where I'll just be57:16like, "What am I doing on Instagram? Why57:17am I thinking?" And all of a sudden,57:18I'll get distracted and start thinking57:20about anything I might be worrying57:21about. Am I not even enjoying Instagram57:23anymore? I'm like, "What is this? What57:24am I doing?" It's crazy. Like, the thing57:26that we thought would connect us all has57:29been the thing that has isolated all of57:31us and just completely ruined our our57:34mental capacity to think. You're not57:36supposed to57:37>> see that much content that quickly. that57:40will change your mood. It's like you see57:41something cute like a duck hugging a57:44bunny and then all of a sudden it's like57:45you see something about haunt virus and57:48then you see it's like it's just not57:49healthy for your brain to just move57:52around that much.57:53>> So true.57:54>> I got really depressed on Instagram57:56seeing it was a random advertisement for57:59like a military company who has like58:02dormant satellites in space ready to go58:05like intercept a nuke. Like the ad was58:08basically you're looking from outer58:09space and there's something in the58:10corner and you see kind of a nuke coming58:13up from the horizon and then all of a58:14sudden the jet turns on and then and58:17then a logo plays of like the company it58:19is and I saw it. I'm like58:21>> why? It just gave me chills. I'm like58:23why does the public need to know this?58:25Why are we advertising the end of all58:26the times and the end of humans? Like58:28what are we really in that doomsday58:30point where I'm scrolling and see an ad58:32for an iron dome around the entire globe58:34for nuclear warheads? I'm like, this is58:36not something that pertains to my life.58:38I shouldn't see or think about this. No58:39one should have to see or think about58:40this. It's just crazy.58:42>> Like, man, the thing that pissed me off58:44is like uh just how much they're58:46destroying our food supply.58:48>> It's like you can't you can't you can't58:50eat anything. Like uh also because58:52they've destroyed the agriculture,58:54they're running tests on the the potency58:57of like fruits and vegetables and it's58:59dropped by like double digit59:01percentages. And it's like it's so crazy59:04that we're at a point where we can't59:05even trust59:06>> the food that we're eating to give us59:08nutrition.59:08>> I'm a little more simpler than you guys,59:10bro. Talking about nuke and agriculture.59:13I was like, "Your socks have 95%59:17plastic."59:18>> Yeah.59:19>> And literally seeps plastic into your59:21bloodstream. I was like, "See you later,59:22Adidas."59:23>> Yeah. [laughter] Yeah.59:24>> Literally, it was just like, "What the59:26heck?" I didn't get depressed, but I was59:27like, "I'm not buying these at all, man.59:29>> I'm taking these off right now."59:30>> Literally. Oh yeah. Wait, can you put59:33him back on?59:34>> Really? [laughter]59:36>> No, but I think I [snorts] I like um59:38when we had uh59:40what was his name? I'm so stupid.59:42>> James59:43>> Ston.59:44>> Yes. When we had James Ston, he said it59:46best that it's like you have to remember59:47that these apps are not made to make59:49your life better.59:50>> Most people think technology, they think59:52technology is made to make your life59:53better. Oh, the phone, it makes your59:54life better. The car, it makes your life59:56better. These social media apps were not59:58designed to make your life better. It's1:00:00not like other technology. People see1:00:02technology and they think, "Oh, someone1:00:03engineered this for me to do something1:00:05easier." No. Social media was engineered1:00:07specifically to make your life worse, to1:00:09get every single second of your1:00:11attention at any point that they can1:00:12have it and then sell you things, make1:00:14you think things, change the narrative.1:00:16It is designed specifically to get you1:00:18addicted, buy things, see things that1:00:20they want you to see and think, and1:00:21nothing else. It disconnects you from1:00:23your friends and family. It is not1:00:25something that was made to make your1:00:26life better. People see it and they're1:00:27like, "Oh, it's cool technology. It1:00:29makes my life better." No, exceptively1:00:31makes your life worse.1:00:31>> Yeah, I was going to say except for1:00:33there's one thing I know that was1:00:34designed to make your life better. Made1:00:36my life better. Is actually part of my1:00:37life.1:00:39>> What's that?1:00:39>> It's called the go1:00:42>> core of the heart.1:00:43>> You don't know the name of the app?1:00:44>> It's called the What's it called again,1:00:46guys? Oh my god.1:00:46>> It's called Core of the Heart Daily. I1:00:48was going to say the gospel bot,1:00:49>> but core of the heart daily. And it does1:00:51have the gospel bot. It's just basically1:00:55going to make God a habit in your life1:00:57every single day.1:00:59>> Get off the apps.1:01:00>> Consistency.1:01:01>> That is an app that was specifically1:01:03designed to make your life better.1:01:05>> It's the counterculture app.1:01:06>> They come very far and few in between1:01:07these days.1:01:08>> It's not social media. You're not1:01:10supposed to go on and connect with1:01:11friends and get validation and seek all1:01:12these types of things. It's not. You go1:01:14on and you connect deeper with God. It's1:01:15your way to make God a habit.1:01:17>> I'm really interested to see like we've1:01:18gotten to this extreme. Like I feel like1:01:20we're at an extreme. and the pendulum is1:01:22swimming fully right to like capitalism1:01:24and consumerism and I'm just curious to1:01:27see like what is going to hopefully pull1:01:30people out of it because it's super1:01:31hard. I'm trying to break my foundation.1:01:33>> I know it's going to pull people out of1:01:34it.1:01:35>> Let me guess. God1:01:36>> core of the heart daily.1:01:37>> Oh, right. Facts. That's what we're1:01:40hoping. Seriously. 100 million souls in1:01:42heaven and then some.1:01:44>> Mhm.1:01:44>> And then some. So yeah, to answer your1:01:47question, it comes from random spurts of1:01:49scrolling on social media. But if anyone1:01:50can relate to that, scroll on core the1:01:52heart daily instead. Cuz truly that is a1:01:55piece of technology designed to make1:01:57your life better. Stop wasting your time1:01:59on Instagram and the billion dollar1:02:01corporations specifically there to get1:02:03you addicted and lose your money.1:02:05Instead, maybe spend your time on1:02:06something we designed specifically to1:02:08help you.1:02:09>> They put so much like uh what is it like1:02:12psychologist behind that, too. They hire1:02:14teams and like droves of people to like1:02:16>> be like this color does this and it's1:02:19like1:02:19>> oh it's even worse they walk the line of1:02:21illegal. How close to gambling can we1:02:23get before breaking a law? How close to1:02:25addictive can we get before breaking1:02:26law? These social media1:02:27>> lawyers like that.1:02:28>> Oh yeah they've been sued in the past1:02:29for making the apps too addictive. What1:02:31which app got sued for making for being1:02:33too addictive? And they1:02:34>> Fortnite1:02:35could have Farmville.1:02:37>> Farmville or what?1:02:38>> No. And like Candy Crush I think.1:02:39>> Candy Crush and like um1:02:41>> Dang.1:02:41>> Yeah. like they'll ride the line of1:02:43what's even legally allowed because1:02:45they've been outlawed in outlawed in1:02:47places like China cuz the phones are1:02:49just too addictive. They have like1:02:50literal laws against it because here1:02:52they're just like screw them, get them1:02:53addicted. But it's like they literally1:02:55ride as close as possible to1:02:57>> something that is potentially illegal1:02:59just to get you addicted just to steal1:03:01your information. The world just seems1:03:03dystopian when everything is a gambling1:03:05ad. Everything is Palunteer. Everything1:03:08Yeah. Everything is only fans gambling.1:03:10Someone trying to sell you something1:03:11some1:03:13make you sick.1:03:13>> No matter what the check, Johnny will1:03:15never take a gambling ad. They could1:03:17give us a billion dollars. You'll never1:03:19see gambling being promoted.1:03:21>> What if we take the billion and we build1:03:22a billion churches?1:03:24>> No, thank you. I'm not trying to take1:03:26bad money.1:03:27>> We'll never take a gambling ad.1:03:29>> What? No, I'm just [laughter]1:03:33>> Yeah, it's very very dark. And it's all1:03:35and also when you think about it, it's1:03:37like all those things are like just1:03:39temporary relief. It's like this this1:03:41idea of like extreme reward for very1:03:44little1:03:45>> um for very little1:03:48input.1:03:48>> Like I remember uh Tik Tok used to I1:03:50think they got sued for like the fake1:03:52views because at in the beginning it was1:03:55inflated1:03:55>> really.1:03:56>> Yeah. Because people would get so1:03:57addicted to getting the views or people1:03:59thought that they could they would go on1:04:00and refresh and check over and over1:04:02again and there was something where they1:04:03were checking who was refreshing and1:04:04they not1:04:05>> going to lie feels incredible. The first1:04:07day I went viral on TikTok it literally1:04:10>> felt like heroin.1:04:11>> Yeah, that's why they [laughter] that's1:04:12another reason why they boost fresh1:04:14accounts. Like1:04:15>> it's a rumor, but it's also true.1:04:16>> So true. It's so true.1:04:18>> It was crazy. It was just sitting there1:04:20refreshing and you're see cuz I've never1:04:22seen no social media1:04:23>> jumped it like that. Crazy.1:04:25pulling the screen down and it's going1:04:2725,000 views, 32,000 views and and I'm1:04:30seeing comments just where I buy this1:04:32drink. I'm just saying it is addicting.1:04:34I can tell you I can agree from personal1:04:36experience. It changed my whole life.1:04:37The first time I went viral, I got1:04:39completely addicted instantly. It felt1:04:40like discovering a superpower. I was1:04:42like, "Oh my gosh, I can get 26 million1:04:44views in 2 days. I'm going to dedicate1:04:46the rest of my life to figuring out1:04:48every single piece of this plat." I1:04:50literally thought, "Okay, I'm going to1:04:51go train on the top of a mountain like a1:04:53samurai until I can hone this so1:04:55perfectly because I was like, "This is1:04:57just insane."1:04:58>> Hey, you you did do it, though.1:05:00>> That's right. [laughter]1:05:02>> Did1:05:04it was a good addiction. You know what1:05:05I'm saying?1:05:05>> Hey, no, but now he's that he's the one1:05:07samurai that made it. He's trying to1:05:08tell the other samurai, "No,1:05:11he's like, "Don't make it here."1:05:13>> Yeah. [laughter] Yeah. He's wise now.1:05:15>> Turn turn around while you can.1:05:17>> Yeah. Like gray beard. I think for me1:05:19when I first touched like 10K selling uh1:05:23rugs,1:05:25>> Egyptian [laughter] rugs,1:05:27>> Persian rugs,1:05:28>> Persian rugs, and the good quality, good1:05:30quality. Um that was like what I could1:05:33do this. It was like1:05:35>> true. I still remember that feeling to1:05:37this day. And I'm like, dang, it makes1:05:39sense. Like getting money is also an1:05:41addiction. For real. For real. and a1:05:43Chinese a paper they love money1:05:46>> man you didn't even care like the first1:05:48time you got a million views you didn't1:05:50>> I mean under belly1:05:52>> I was cool I was like dang that's I was1:05:54more thankful of the comments when1:05:56people were sitting there going wow this1:05:58changed my life I was like wow I did I1:06:00get teeyed and I was like whoa people1:06:02are hearing the gospel but I wasn't like1:06:03million views I didn't really care about1:06:05that more it was like dang all these1:06:07people are like listening and then I1:06:10wake up and I look at my Instagram it's1:06:11like 10,000 followers cuz I'm like,1:06:13"What the hell, man?" I had like at that1:06:16time like maybe 1,200 something.1:06:18>> And that didn't make you feel nothing.1:06:20>> I mean, it made me feel good, but I1:06:22wasn't like like kind of like what Aaron1:06:24was saying like, "I'm going to sit on a1:06:25mountain top."1:06:26>> I was like I'm like, "Let me get up on1:06:28that mountain with you."1:06:30>> I became a disciple.1:06:31>> Yeah. It wasn't like that. It was But1:06:33the money was was the thing that I was I1:06:36was like, "Dude, I I I made I thought I1:06:38made it. I touched 10,000. I was like, I1:06:40made it. [laughter] I made it. We did1:06:42it." Joe, like you know it's like that1:06:43>> I legit felt like I I and then that1:06:46would that snowballed no 10k and let me1:06:50see if I could push it and I would push1:06:51and I'll push and I'll push and then I'm1:06:53like dang. And then I did I wouldn't get1:06:55tired like you know me when I when I1:06:58like napped 20 and I hop back up like1:07:01that came from I developed that through1:07:03like I think prison but also drug like1:07:06selling drugs cuz people would hit me up1:07:08all hours and I hop up and I'd do it or1:07:10I'll give it to the little homies and do1:07:12it and I'm just like dang. And it felt1:07:14so good to just sit there. I was a type1:07:16of even as a kid, I had a crisp $2 bill1:07:20and I would fold it and I would clean it1:07:22and I would like unfold it and be like,1:07:24"Oh, and I like loved money, bro." It1:07:27was so freaking bad. So bad. But yeah,1:07:30that was a thing where I was like, I1:07:32want to make money. I want to make1:07:33money. Whatever I do, I got to make1:07:35money. That was more than any views or1:07:38whatever. To me, it's like you could get1:07:40a million views, but I'd like a million1:07:42dollars better. like, you know, it's1:07:44like it was this type of energy.1:07:46>> Now it's just like, no, I want a million1:07:47souls, which is more greedy,1:07:50>> right? Cuz cuz a soul is priceless. So1:07:52really, it was a good addiction. Money,1:07:54souls, no, I'm just kidding.1:07:55>> That's good, though. That's That is1:07:57good. That's why you have like a sense1:07:58for money now. Like it does take that1:08:00and it takes that drive and some people1:08:02will never have it. So1:08:04>> yeah, back1:08:05>> I finally came around to that. Like1:08:06before I had no sense of money. I was1:08:09never doing things to to make the money1:08:10cuz I have never had never made1:08:12significant money and I always just had1:08:14a sense of a safety net before it was1:08:16like totally for things like validation1:08:17or let me just figure this out for the1:08:19the game.1:08:20>> Yeah. When you told me you would throw1:08:21like 5gs into the crowd or something. I1:08:23was like where the heck was I probably1:08:25lock [laughter] probably locked up. But1:08:27>> I would always like be really good at1:08:28garnering attention online but I could1:08:30never turn it into money. Maybe because1:08:32I never cared. And it was the same thing1:08:33like we all used to sell stuff in high1:08:34school, but for me it was just more for1:08:36the love of the game than really like I1:08:37don't even know what I would do with the1:08:38money. I don't remember that part.1:08:40>> But it just like I don't know1:08:42>> now every day he's like AMD AMD AMD.1:08:45[laughter]1:08:45>> So true.1:08:47>> Hey, listen for everyone listening, buy1:08:48AMD.1:08:49>> Yeah,1:08:49>> that is not financial advice.1:08:51>> And clip this in 10 years and when when1:08:53you're in your mansion.1:08:55>> Yeah. And have your belly lap.1:08:57>> Did you guys see it this morning?1:08:58Another great day to own AMD. [laughter]1:09:01The streamathon is live. That wraps up1:09:43this Thank you guys for so much. What1:09:45the hell does that even mean? [snorts]1:09:47Thank you guys so much for tuning in to1:09:49the Unlearned Wisdom podcast.1:09:51>> Oh, tell them to leave a good thoughtful1:09:52comment. Once again,1:09:53>> please leave a really what1:09:54>> what's a hidden idol that they1:09:56>> Yeah. Be honest. So, we talked about1:09:57some hidden idols today. To finish up1:10:00the episode, write in the comments.1:10:02Comment below, guys, what you think is a1:10:04hidden idol that we missed. That's all1:10:06around churches. It doesn't have to be1:10:08in a church. It's a hidden idol. Comment1:10:10and be thoughtful. Be thorough with it.1:10:11>> And if you're real honest, be like,1:10:14"Yeah, I realize I'm a prideful person."1:10:16>> Yeah. Like, did this episode help you1:10:18realize that you were potentially1:10:20worshiping a hidden idol of1:10:22acknowledgement, pride, praise, etc.?1:10:24All right. And like all Unlearned Wisdom1:10:27episodes and in this fashion, we're1:10:30going to pray out. So, let us bow our1:10:32heads. Father God, thank you so much,1:10:34Lord, for giving us this podcast to be1:10:36able to shed light on these hidden1:10:38idols. So many of us didn't realize that1:10:40we're worshiping things that are1:10:42detrimental to our spirit, to our soul,1:10:44to just everything about us. Father God,1:10:47we thank you, Lord, that you always walk1:10:49in alignment with us and you make our1:10:50crooked path straight. Many times we1:10:53stray and there's so much1:10:54acknowledgement in this world and1:10:55validation and individualism in this1:10:57world that it's hard to detect because1:10:59the enemy is subtle. But Lord, you said1:11:02you said that you're with us till the1:11:03ends of the earth. You said do not worry1:11:05about the tomorrow for you will take1:11:07care of everything and you don't have1:11:08evil thoughts of us but thoughts of1:11:10peace to give us an expected end. Father1:11:13God, we thank you that truly without1:11:14you, we would be completely lost.1:11:16Without the word of God and the Holy1:11:18Spirit guiding us in Jesus Christ and1:11:19his blood and his righteousness clothing1:11:21us, we would be literally walking the1:11:24path of destruction and not even1:11:26realizing it. Satan is that cunning and1:11:28yet you're so much stronger than him.1:11:30Father God, we thank you forever and1:11:32ever and ever. We leave everything in1:11:34your hands, God. And in Jesus name we1:11:36pray. Amen. Amen.1:11:38>> Amen. Like, comment, and subscribe.
